In this essay, you will reflect on how to apply what you've learned in the course about the sociological study of race & ethnicity.

Topic A-- Write a course reflection that describes your journey through this class. Your goal is to relay what major perspectives/views/assumptions about race & ethnicity you had prior to taking the course, how you responded to the class and incorporated its information into your thinking, and ultimately how your overall perspective shifted. Be sure to focus on big ideas and conclusions, not small details.

CONTENT:

• Discuss course content in at least half of the essay.
• Incorporate content/evidence from throughout the course/semester -- not just one topic, or one Unit.
• To be eligible for the highest scores, you should have at least 5 different citations/references to content from our class.
• Include a variety of examples from our course, drawing from several of these: readings & other homework assignments, Prof Notes, webquests, videos, discussions, and your own life experience.
• You're welcome to include additional outside sources if you feel it will strengthen your essay.
• Make sure to do more than repeat points/arguments made in the class: develop your own analyses, arguments, proposals, and conclusions. You want to showcase how your thinking goes beyond the course content, while staying in conversation with it.

WRITING:

• Give the paper a title that makes it clear which topic you chose. (Be an original!)
• Include a thesis statement in an introduction that conveys your major idea(s)/thesis.
• Write in your own words.
• Limit use of direct quotes (1 per page maximum). Instead, practice the art of paraphrasing (=writing/explaining in your own words while retaining accuracy to your sources and citing them).
• You can use an official citation style that you know well. Or, keep it simple & clear with informal citations -- Some examples: (Prof Notes #12b), (D&E p. 196), ('Where are you from?' video), (Racial Dot Map).
