Reflective paper start: Program Goals The ability to apply these major concepts are lessons learned while achieving an undergraduate degree in psychology. “As described in Undergraduate Psychology Major learning Goals and Outcomes APA (2002b), the task force identified 10 goals and suggested learning outcomes representing reasonable departmental expectations for the undergraduate psychology major across educational contexts. The goals were divided into two major categories; a) knowledge, skills, and values consistent with the science and application of psychology and b) knowledge, skills, and values consistent with liberal arts education that are further developed in psychology” (APA, 2007). Explaining why psychology is a science is an important aspect of this goal. Psychology is a science because it is the study of scientific thought or behavior. I learned this while studying general psychology and while taking my introduction to psychology course. Identifying and explaining the primary objectives of psychology is also crucial to achieving an undergraduate degree. While studying Theories of Personality, Social Psychology, and Psychology of Stress I was able to identify the objectives of describing, understanding and predicting controlled behavior and mental processes. Abnormal Psychology also contributed to my knowledge methods of psychology with other disciplines. Learning basic knowledge of research methodology was incorporated in several classes taken while achieving my Psychology degree. The Research Methods in Psychology course specifically taught me how to distinguish between the best practices of research to use when exploring research. I am able to understand the differences in using experimental research when developing a hypothesis and correlational research when comparing an outcome. I understand the importance of survey use and writing a survey so that it is not biased to reflect my expected outcome. Clinical Psychology and Sensation and Perception contributed to my ability to be able to counsel clients. I generally use open ended questions and prefer the humanistic theory along with cognitive behavior therapy with clients. I will monitor their body language, eye contact and speech to determine their needs. Biological Basis of Behavior has taught me to be vigilant for signs of abuse and trauma (Apa, et al 2002). I also learned and appreciate the importance of listening to the clients without interruption. Critical thinking is an imperative tool that all psychologist must be cable of utilizing.
