Write 750 words for EACH of the following short essays. You must demonstrate your understanding of
the reading by directly citing the book (please include page numbers).
You may reflect upon anything that came up during class discussion, if class discussion touched upon
what you are writing about, but do not neglect . focused specifically on the books/required reading.
Student also should do research in the followin b Library databases to find at least one article per
essay that may be helpful for the student: JSTOR, Philosopher's Index and the Religion and Philosophy
Collection. Please cite your articles in MLA format.
Each essay will be weighted equally for a final grade.

1. Plato believed that Aristophanes’ comedic play The Clouds contributed to the negative reputation
Socrates faced over time. ultimately leading to his trial and death sentence. Reportedly. when the play
first came out. Socrates thought it was humorous. Analyze specific sections or scenes in The Clouds that
you think may have been misunderstood or taken too seriously by certain Athenians. so that the fictional
Socrates may have merged together in their minds with the real Socrates.

2. Plato's Apology is his account of Socrates’ defense of himself during his trial. Select and analyze 2-3
examples of what you consider to be Socrates” strongest points made in his own defense and 2-3
examples of what you consider to be weaker points he made in his own detense.
