AEE/CEE/EGM/MEE 546 Introduction to Finite Element Analysis DUE: Wednesday, Dec 7, 2022 at beginning of class Finite Element Analysis of a Structure under Static and Fatigue Loading The project for AEE/CEE/EGM/MEE 546 will consist of a finite element analysis of a torque arm subjected to a steady tensile and a fluctuating load. With instructor approval, you may conduct an analysis of a different structural component (See section below for details). Structural Analysis: Torque Arm
Torque arms are mechanical elements that convert axial motion into rotational motion (or forces into moments). The pictures below show a couple of examples.
The sketch below shows a highly idealized version of a torque arm design. The arm is made of aluminum (E = 73.1 GPa, v = 0.33). The opening on the left side of the part is assumed to be attached to the shaft we wish to apply torque to and can be considered fixed along its entire boundary. The loads applied to the arm at the opposite opening are of two types: there is a constant preload of 4500 N acting to the right, and an alternating load of ±900 N acting vertically. You will need to analyze these two loading conditions separately, and combine the results as described below.
