Discussion Topic:

This week we are learning about computer and online crimes.

Discussion Board #7: This week you will learn a little about one of the newer types of crimes that law enforcement has been attempting to deal with-Computer Crime. Computer crime is moving at a rate that Law enforcement can barely keep up with it-from the investigative processes, to the creation and modification of laws to criminalize behavior associated with computer use. But in many cases, questions arise as to the legality of law enforcement accessing computer or online activity of suspicious persons. Much like the wire taps of phones done in the “old days” computer access and “spying” on database information has required legal recognition and permission. But to what end? Where should the line be drawn? Since the world has become much smaller with the creation of the world wide web, should we live with the guaranteed right of privacy afforded in the US Constitution, or is it time that we look at the needs of the world with regards to privacy and safety, and modify the Constitution to fit the needs of today? For this discussion, discuss these two points:

  1. What priority should law enforcement place on investigations of the various online crimes that occur? (Name the crimes you are discussing and what priority-be sure to think of all levels of crime, including terrorism).
  2. How should we look at the legality of Online crime, and modify the Constitution to protect the rights of the citizens, yet keep us safe?

Name:_____________________________ Date:_____________________________ Crim 113-Criminal Investigations Assignment #6-Plaster Cast Mold or Planning a Burglary Students will have their choice of assignments to complete. Choose only ONE from the following to complete and submit. Assignment Option A-Impression Cast Molds For this assignment, students will be required to purchase material for the cast Mold. You will be making a mold of a foot or tire print and sending a picture of your creation, along with a narrative about your experience in making one. Before beginning you will need to acquire material for the mold. While evidence technicians and detectives use a special compound, we can use simple material bought at a hardware store. The best material to use is Plaster of Paris, or Durham’s Putty, both available at Menards, Home Depot, Lowes, Walmart, etc. for no more than $10.00. Refer to the website http://www.crime-scene-investigator.net/footwear.html to follow directions on creating the mold impression. You can use a shoebox with the bottom cut out as a mold frame, or for our purpose, just spread into the impression. Do NOT go too deep, but deep enough that it does not crack when you try to remove it. (at least ½” thick). Make sure to let it dry to firm up as well. Once you complete the mold, take pictures, remove the mold and take pictures of the cast, and submit them, along with a short narrative. In the narrative, briefly describe the process you used to make your impression. Be sure to identify which material you used. Explain what type of impression you took, where you collected it, the process you followed, and so on. When done, include answers to the following: 1. What did you find difficult in creating a mold impression? 2. What would you do differently the next time? 3. Why are mold impressions a potentially important piece of evidence when investigating thefts or Burglaries? Assignment Option B-Investigating a Burglary For this assignment, students will create a “sample investigation” that describes the method of investigating a Burglary scene. The truly important, and quite often destroyed or forgotten pieces of evidence, are understanding the Method of Operation of the suspect. Three key pieces of investigative information that needs to be identified are the approach to entry, method of entry and point of entry. An investigator that understands this will benefit greatly in the process of investigating Burglaries. In this assignment, you will assume the role of an investigator in a Burglary case you will create. After reviewing the chapter, begin from being dispatched to the scene of your Burglary. Describe your approach to investigating it, and include the following key points: 1. How will you begin your investigation? 2. What will you consider when identifying the approach of the suspect? 3. What was the point of entry, and why do you feel it was chosen? 4. What was the method of entry and why did they choose that method? 5. What was the focus of their Burglary, and what might the type of property taken give clues to the motive for the crime? 6. What was the point of exit? 7. What additional information should or could you collect at the scene? (actions of the property owner, security of the home, time of day, type of community setting, etc.). Much of this will be in your scenario. To create this assignment, begin with a crime reported to the police, and what you learned before arriving about the scene. Refer to yourself as the investigating officer, and talk in first person (I, me, etc.). Work through investigating a whole crime scene. Length of the paper cannot be specific, but at least two-three pages (not including the Cover page (required) and Reference page should be included in APA format. Assignment #6 is due by the posted due date. NO late assignments will be accepted.
