Option 2: Positive Psychology for Institutional Change

In addition to individual change, the science of positive psychology has the potential to be used at an “institutional” or systemic level to bring about positive change in communities, schools, political systems (at local, national and international levels), and more. For this proposal, you’ll select a systems level issue for change and developing an intervention plan, using a social norms intervention or other positive psychology intervention.

The systems level:

Fostering behaviors related to public health. This could be pandemic-related (e.g., mask wearing, vaccination acceptance) or other non-pandemic public health problems (e.g., obesity, texting while driving). You’ll need to focus on specific public health-related behavior, not just “public health.” Because alcohol use/binge drinking was the focus of Discussion 5, it cannot be used for the project.

1. Discuss your selected societal issue – focus on why that issue needs to be addressed and your goal for the intervention. Research is useful here; you might discuss research that supports your selection. One paragraph/5points
2. Describe your proposed intervention. Explain research that supports your intervention choice. 1-2 paragraphs
3. Explain how you would monitor and evaluate the success of your intervention plan. One paragraph
4. References – a minimum of 3 relevant scholarly (peer-reviewed) references (not including your text), each cited in APA format. Positive psychology is a relatively new discipline - aim for recent (within last 10-15 years) sources.
