STEP #4 - CONSIDER -- Albert Beveridge's Speech Before Congress

Albert Beveridge to Congress:

Mr. President, the times call for candor. The Philippines are ours forever, "territory belonging to the United States," as the Constitrltion calls them. And just beyond the Philippines are China's illimitable markets. We will not retreat from either. We will not repudiate our duty in the archipelago. We will not abandon our opportunity in the Orient. We will not renounce our part in the mission of our race, trustee, under God, of the civilization of the world. And we will move forward to our work, not howling out regrets like slaves whipped to their burdens, but with gratitude for a task worthy of our strength, and thanksgiving to Almighty God that He has marked us as His chosen people, henceforth to lead in the regeneration of the world.

Mr. President, this question is deeper than any question of party politics: deeper than any question of the isolated policy of our country even; deeper even than any question of constitutional power. It is elemental. It is racial. God has not been preparing the English-speaking and Teutonic peoples for a thousand years for nothing hut vain and idle self-contemplation and self-admiration. No! He has made us the master organizers of the world to establish system where chaos reigns. He has given its the spirit of progress to overwhelm the forces of reaction throughout the earth. He has made us adepts in government that we may administer government among savage and senile peoples. Were it not for such a force as this the world would relapse into barbarism and night. And of all our race He has marked the American people as His chosen nation to finally lead in the regeneration of the world. This is the divine mission of America, and it holds for us all the profit, all the glory, all the happiness possible to man. We are trustees of the world's progress, guardians of its righteous peace. The judgment of the Master is upon us: "Ye have been faithful over a few things; I will make you ruler over many thing."w

Watch – “Harvest of Empire” online

Read – “The Empire and the People” and “War is the Health of the State,” from A People’s History

If we were to look at a map of all the islands in the Pacific Ocean during this time, you might understand why. Please look at the map I've included in your Assignment #13 Folder. What do you notice? Any idea why we would want to control all of those islands out there in the Pacific Ocean? Any idea when the Panama Canal was built? Think it had anything to do with this? What other thoughts do you have concerning this war from your reading, Zinn's graphic novel on American Empire, and all the far-reaching implications for us today? How does this war lead the world into World War I?

1- - When you see our textbooks it is clear to see the bias. Some of the stories that I was told in my history classes were not really clear and it felt like the stories were always from one side. I believe that could be the reason that students are being told information that is false. The stories are always exaggerated and oversimplified if we had a history textbook that was written by the views of the natives the stories would be completely different. Since the whites were in power for the most part of history of the united states they made themselves look good, and I really don't blame them because how would want to be reasonsible for the murder of thousand of people and why would they want to be know as people that displaced the people that lived in the us before them. I believe the video did a great job of explaining how the country was and how society determined if you could vote or not. Property and slaves was a status symbol of wealth and that tells you how this nation was made up.

2- From the map, I noticed how all the Pacific islands are located in Asia. I think America wanted control of these islands because they wanted China to reach out to them for help. I think America saw how profitable these islands will be, so they decided to claim them. Another reason is that America may have wanted to expand its land in profitable areas. The Panama Canal was built around the early 1900s. The Panama Canal may have been built so that America could acquire goods being transported to Panama. In Albert Beveridge’s speech, an “ism” that is present is the term ‘barbarism’. Albert Beveridge was making claims about how America was chosen by God to control the world and if America does not, the world will erupt with chaos. In the reading, I found it interesting how America goes into other countries and treats them like it is American society. I also found it interesting how America is willing to invade another country to gain profit and settle the chaos within its own country. I also found it interesting how Blacks and Filipinos were willing to fight for America, but when they came back from the war, America treated them as if they were dirt. I found it interesting how America had its own struggles internally but went on and claimed countries such as Puerto Rico. Lastly, I found it interesting how America did not think about how participating in these wars was affecting the American people. Their judgment was clouded by greed and hunger for power.
