MEDI382 Assessment information

Assessment TWO: P.O.E.M Research Summary (Patient Oriented Evidence that Matters)

LENGTH: 1200 words (+/-10% allowance). The word count EXCLUDES the reference list, figures, figure captions, tables and table captions). In-text referencing is INCLUDED in the 1200-word limit.

WEIGHTING: 25%

DETAILS: You will be assigned ONE pharmacological or non-pharmacological strategy currently utilised in the treatment of your assigned disease topic. You will be provided with a primary research paper that is a meta-analysis and systematic literature review (SLR), which is what you will primarily use for part ii of this assessment (Note: These papers will be assigned by week 6).

Your report should be composed as follows:

i) describe the mechanism of action for the treatment (~300 words),

? Describe, in detail, the mechanism of action of the assigned treatment strategy and its resultant effects on the body, relate this back to the relevant physiology

? utilise additional studies to support your statements, these may include laboratory studies (cell culture, animal

or human studies)

? chances are that the primary research paper that we give you might have more than one therapy in its research.

In this case, we will advise you which therapy that you will need to discuss in this section. In section ii, as you are critically evaluating the paper, you may briefly state the class of medication/s used as a comparator in the paper (if the name of the class describes its function), or give a description of their mechanism of action to ensure that it is clear that you can tell the difference between the therapies listed in the primary research paper.

Otherwise, compare your treatment to the control group (depending on the study this may be a placebo, or may be a standard drug regime commonly used for the disease).

ii) using your primary research paper, critically analyse the evidence available to support the use of your treatment strategy and critically evaluate the quality of that evidence that exists in your primary research paper and other

literature (~900 words). As such, this will require you to:

? compare the effectiveness of your assigned treatment with another therapy that is provided in your primary research paper, or to placebo (whichever is indicated for your paper). The comparison of medications in your paper would focus on the primary and secondary outcomes stipulated in the primary journal paper (it might be improvement in a certain blood marker for example). Report relevant data and statistical values.

? include additional papers that can support or refute the evidence provided in the primary research paper. This

is important to the overall evaluation of the evidence and implications for clinical practice.

? examine the prevalence of side effects or contraindications of its use (include additional references to list these/add additional supporting evidence for your evaluation)

? critically evaluate the quality of the evidence that is more widely available. Things to consider:

? what level/s of evidence were the original research papers that were included in the SLR? Are there other papers that are superior or provided supporting evidence, or contradict the findings/conclusions of the primary research paper?

? are the sample size and sample population selected appropriate, are appropriate controls utilised, are participants and/or administrators blinded to treatment regime, how were participants allocated to a treatment group, are there any details missing?

? are there any conflicts of interest or ethical issues to consider?MEDI382 Assessment information

MEDI382 2022 SPRING SESSION ASSESSMENT SUMMARY

? What are the strengths and limitations of the paper? You may discuss the ones provided by the authors, but also think outside of the ones listed by the authors.

? What are the implications for practice; is the chosen therapy recommended in current therapeutic

guidelines, NHMRC clinical guidelines or WHO guidelines? Is it recommended by the relevant not-forprofit organisation?

? References should be formatted as NUMBERED referencing (Vancouver numbered referencing style)

GENERAL MARKING CRITERIA (a rubric will be made available for this assessment):

You will be awarded marks based on:

? The clarity of your explanations for the mechanism of action of the treatment strategy

? The accuracy of the information presented in sections i and ii

? Quality of the evidence utilised, by:

? succinctly summarising and critically analysing the available evidence that supports the treatment strategy

? evaluating the quality of the available evidence to support the treatment strategy and identifying other research that validates or opposes the research

? discussing the strengths and limitations of the primary research paper

? Suitability of the research papers utilised (are they relevant, current (within the past 10 years), high quality)

? Please note that for section i (the mechanism of action), you may not be able to use current research papers

if the medication has been used in clinical practice for several decades. You will not be penalised if in this section, some of your references are earlier than 2010. Please note that you can also use textbooks (such as Rang & Dale’s Pharmacology) if appropriate.

? Length of report (marks will be deducted if it exceeds 1200 words +/-10% allowance)

? References should be formatted according to NUMBERED referencing (Vancouver numbered referencing style)

SUBMISSION DETAILS:

? You will be required to upload your report via TURNITIN under the assessment section of the Moodle site.

? Please ensure that you allow yourselves enough time to upload your essay and check your originality report, so that you have enough time to make any necessary changes and re-upload your essay if required by the due date.
