POLS 3317, Exam #1 The following exam is open note, open book - you may rely on your textbook and readings, class notes, and class powerpoints to support your answers (which you do not need to cite). At times you are asked to bring in specific examples to help support your answer. Be sure to cite these outside sources. Include one works cited page in APA Style at the end of your exam. Avoid general answers that do not reflect your grasp of the material. The more specific and supported your answers are, the better. By turning in this exam, you are agreeing that this is your original work and that you did not work with another student to answer these questions.

 

Short Answers – 15 Points Each

(1 to 5 sentences each)

 

1.            Select one of the four major eras of political campaigns (Chapter 3). Based on the era you selected, identify and explain one feature of that era. Then compare that feature to modern campaigns and elections (Chapter 5). How are campaigns similar or different? Use at least one specific example.

 

2.            Identify two voting restrictions that used to be in place in the United States. What ended them?  (Be specific in relation to the law, court decision, etc.)

 

 

3.            Many state and local elections are held in off-cycle terms (meaning not during the presidential or midterm elections). How does this fact impact turnout and influence in these elections?

 

 

4.            A recent poll conducted by the Georgia local station Fox 5 Atlanta includes results on the Georgia governor race. The findings report 50% for Brian Kemp and 45% for Stacey Abrams, with 2% undecided, and 3% having no opinion. The margin of error is +/- 4.3 points. With that information, how can we make sense of the results as they related to Kemp? Meaning, what percent of respondents say they will vote for Kemp when we include the margin of error?

 

 

 

 

 

 

Short Essay – 20 Points Each (Answer 2)

Select TWO of the following essay questions and answer them in approximately 200-300 words.

NOTE: You do NOT need to answer all three, only two.

 

1.            Consider the candidate you are profiling for your paper in this course. Is this candidate running as an incumbent, a challenger, or in an open-seat race? Explain how this reality appears to be impacting their campaign strategy. Do they appear to be relying more on mobilizing partisans/their base or attempting to persuade independent/swing voters? Give two examples of things the candidate/campaign team have done or said to support this answer.

 

2.            You are a wealthy person who wants to influence this election season in support of your preferred party and their candidates. Where can you give money and what are the limitations on how much you can give to each area? How has the Supreme Court impacted your ability to give and the ability of candidates and other groups to spend?

 

3.            Define gerrymandering and how it is connected to the census count, reapportionment, and redistricting. What types of gerrymandering has the Supreme Court banned and what type of gerrymandering is not banned?

 

 

Optional Extra Credit (Up to 5 points added to exam) 

?             Find and download your sample ballot for the November 2022 election. 

?             Identify 3 pieces of information on every candidate on the ballot (include links to your sources – but no need to spend time formally citing).

?             Attach your answers and your sample ballot to your exam submission.

?             There are no formatting requirements for this, so I would recommend not worrying about making it look pretty.

(NOTE: If you are not eligible to vote, you can identify a sample ballot in your area, or contact me to help you locate that. Even if you are not able to participate in the election, these elected officials have significant impact on your life, so it would be a valuable exercise to learn more about the candidates. )
