1000-word essay #2
Write a 4-page paper answering the following question:
« Are the US and China destined for military conflict? Why or why not? If yes, how big a war are they likely to fight?
Your paper should have all of the following elements:
1. Draw on the ideas, facts, and arguments from the assigned course readings relevant to this question. This is an analytical exercise, not a research one. You can make your own arguments, but the paper should demonstrate a firm grip on the most relevant facts and arguments from the course readings.
2. Support your thesis with reasons and evidence, rather than personal opinions or arguments from authority (i.e., “X is true because Professor Peanut said so").
3. Your paper should make an argument, though not necessarily a simplistic or unqualified one. If you take a strong position (“definitely yes” or “definitely no"), be sure to address the most important objection(s) to it.
4. Include an objection and a rebuttal.
§. The paper should be close to four pages in length—typed, with double-spaced 12-point text, using standard margins and spacing. It should be no shorter than 1,000 words.
6. Cite the sources of all ideas and information using an in-text parenthetical reference at the end of the sentence before the period, including the page #s (if available) where the ideas/information are provided, like this: (author's last name, year: page #).
7. Use space efficiently. No digressions, background info, repetition, or unnecessary verbiage.
8. Follow the rest of the suggestions in my memo, “How to Write Political Science Papers: Some Useful Guidelines,” available from the link in the course syllabus.
9. Take a look at the grading criteria below.
Your essay must be submitted via SafeAssign.
* To upload your paper, it must first be saved to your computer. SafeAssign only supports file types that are convertible to plain text, which includes these file types: DOCX, DOC, PPT, PPTX, PDF, TXT, ODT, RTF, HTML, and HTM. If you use a word processor that does not automatically use these formats, your best bet is to save a copy of your paper in one of these formats using “Save as..." and select RTF from
the format menu.
* Click on the link at the top of this assignment (next to the open book icon), and find and select the file where you saved it using the "Browse My Computer" button. Check the box indicating that you “| agree to submit my paper(s) to the Global Reference Database,” and click “Submit.”
« If you inadvertently submit the wrong document, you can submit a second, corrected one before the due date.
* (If either the CUNY Portal or SafeAssign is not working, try again later.
