Health Science

Choose one of the following topics. You should follow the organizational guidelines we will cover in class. Your response should use a conversational tone; it’s not a formal academic response like writings one and two. Because of the conversational tone, this assignment will work best as a letter. 1. Anti-Vaxxers: Watch this 7-minute video about the anti-vaccine movement in Texas and then write a multiple-paragraph, 750-word response to Briscoe Cain or Stacy Methvin (the first two interviewees). Note: This video is specific to childhood vaccines; it doesn’t address the Covid vaccine. https://youtu.be/npYocgDntyY For supporting evidence, you may use this link or find your own research. Since the science -deniers are in Texas, I thought it might work best to provide a response from a Texas-based organization: https://www.txhealthsteps.com/static/warehouse/1076-2011-Oct-5914xy7h5o18vniswe623/section_2.html 2. Pandemic is a hoax: Watch this 3-minute video and then write a multiple-paragraph, 750-word response to Kate Shemirani. https://youtu.be/aRWHMfoNSJs For supporting evidence, you may use this link or find your own research: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/cases-updates/about-us-cases-deaths.html Liberty vs. Safety: The Issue of Children’s Vaccines Student’s Name Liberty vs. Safety 2 Dear Ms. Stacy Methvin, My name is XXX, and I am a pre-med student at the University of Southern Texas. I watched your perspective on Vice News regarding Texas anti-vaxxers preaching liberty rather than safety. I have researched the reasons for childhood vaccinations as well as the reasons some parents feel hesitant about vaccines. I would like to discuss your viewpoints and ask a few questions that regard your position. The topic of children's health is a primary concern for me because of my pre-med background. I don't have children, but if I did, I know their care would be all I thought about. I don’t doubt your care for your children; however, what would happen to your perspective if your son developed a fatal disease that a vaccine could have prevented? A vaccine's sole purpose is to protect our youth from these fatal illnesses, which we have been doing since the 1950s. As I watched the video, I did agree with your statement that the federal government doesn't have the right to mandate vaccines. I wouldn’t want my rights taken away when it comes to decisions that youth cannot make themselves. Children clearly cannot make these executive decisions themselves, which is why they need a supervisor which is the parents. The parent is the sole provider for their children and by all means, we should not allow ourselves to be pushed around by government organizations. I wouldn't pursue vaccines either if they were causing more harm than good, especially regarding children's health. One could argue that the government should not interfere with children's rights to receive/not receive vaccines because they are not the government's children; they are our children. These liberties are especially important when it comes to this denial of intervention because without it there would be no intervention. Some feel the government should stay within its realm of politics and not force itself into specialized fields like medicine. The worry that children are harmed by vaccines is a very valid concern from a parent’s perspective. However, the National Vaccine Advisory Committee has developed standards when Liberty vs. Safety 3 the safety and effectiveness of vaccines is the main concern. The vaccine industries go through rigorous testing that ensures quality and safety. The refusal of childhood vaccinations has serious consequences (OIDP 2018). Those not vaccinated against the disease pertussis are 23 times more likely to get the disease than those who were vaccinated. This is only one example of the importance of vaccines, but I could provide several others. Not only does your child get sick, but the child can also infect other people. In 2008, a 7year-old boy was unvaccinated against measles in Switzerland. When he returned to the US, he infected 839 persons, which was the largest measles outbreak in San Diego since 1991. The term denial can come to mind when there is a disregard for statistics like this (Immunization barriers 2019). How can somebody ignore facts that prove the effectiveness and safety of vaccinations? Factual denial consequently seems like a backfire effect in my opinion. I understand that not everything is 100% preventable but neither is birth control, I see women who have a 1% pregnancy chance, actually get pregnant. These things can happen: However, millions of women around the world still utilize birth control given the downsides. Now, with government intervention and liberties, one question comes to my mind. Is the argument of liberties really worth our children's health and lives? Liberty vs. Safety 4 If I could present current facts/information from credible sources behind the safety and effectiveness of vaccines, and liberties, would you consider looking at it? I would also like to view information from your perspective if you can provide it, so we can establish a common ground. This email is for research purposes, and I would like to gather as much information from your side as well. I hope that this information is helpful to you as it was for me, so we can make the world a better place.
