For this discussion, you will analyze the culture clash scenario outlined in your assigned book, The Spirit catches you and you fall down.

An active discussion is the key to an interesting and engaging online course. As others join in the discussion, read what has already been posted and add substantively to the conversation.  Time goes quickly, so check the discussions as often as you can to see what others have posted and to respond.   Please think about each of the following questions and respond not only to the question but also to what others are saying.

The first question in this discussion is opinion and experience-based, so you can begin immediately

  • Most of us have heard the term “culture clash” in the popular news media. There are many definitions for this term. Many of these personal meanings derive from our own lived experiences.  What does “culture clash” mean to you?

For subsequent questions please meaningfully integrate your assigned module readings and videos. We will go through the questions one at a time. Please draw from the information in the book, citing specific passages as needed, to respond to the following questions one at a time and discuss these issues with classmates and your instructor.  Based on the textbook:

  • In your own words, how would you describe the primary beliefs of the two cultures at odds in the book: the culture of the American healthcare delivery system and the culture of the Hmong family? Where do they clash?
  • In books we often look for villains. Was there a villain in this story? If not, what could have been done differently to improve the Lee’s experience? How do these lessons apply today?
  • Why do you think that Jeanine Hilt succeeded in gaining the Lee’s trust, where so many other providers failed?
  • Let’s incorporate our other course materials into our analysis of the Lee experience. The Davis article describes the challenges minority mothers’ health beliefs present for health providers, and the Roberts video critiques race-based medicine. How do these two different perspectives relate to the culture clash the Lee’s experienced? What are the overriding lessons for today’s health practitioners? Please share examples to illustrate your points.
