In part 3, you chose and found a research article written by your chosen professor, and wrote a summary of it

Sociology Apr 12, 2022

In part 3, you chose and found a research article written by your chosen professor, and wrote a summary of it. Now, you are going to prepare a short version of what is called a literature review. Writing literature reviews is an important skill/tool to develop in science.

  • Find two more articles tightly related to the topic in the original article – these can be other papers by your chosen professor on that same topic, or papers by others related to that same topic. The references/ literature cited section of the first paper would be a good place to look.
  • Go through the same process of finding full-length versions of the articles. (Again, you may not be able to find full versions of all of them, so you may have to choose different articles, but they still have to be related to the same sub-topic.).
  • Write a short summary of the main findings of each of these new articles. You now have your original article summary plus two more.
  • Decide how they relate to/build on one another, and arrange the summaries in that order. (Group X discovered something; Group Y used Group X’s research to study something new: Group Z used the work of Group X and Group Y as inspiration for their research.
  • Now write an introductory paragraph showing how these papers fit together. (Note the link to the example below.). Put the introductory paragraph first.
  •
  • Include a literature cited section at the end of your review, with the citations for all three papers.
  • The final version of your literature review should be about1 and a half pages long, including the references. This should be a word file, a doc file, or a pdf. Check your spelling, grammar, etc.

This is a general discussion of how to approach literature reviews:

This is an example of a short literature review – but longer and in more detail than what I am asking you to do:
