Written Report Case Study
James, 28, has a moderate intellectual disability. He lives with his parents and works part-time in supported employment. He is lonely and has expressed that he would like to make friends. You are James’ caseworker and his NDIS plan identifies as a goal that James would like to join the local gym for fitness and weight management. James will require support and training to achieve this goal.
Questions:
- What barriers/issues need to be considered for James to attend the gym? (List at least 4)
- Identify and describe a local gym in your area. List all the resources and equipment that James needs in order to undertake this PCP goal?
- What skills would James need to have already (pre-requisite) to achieve his goal? (List at least 3)
- How would you monitor and review James’ progress in joining & attending the gym?
- It has been agreed by all parties that James would benefit by travelling independently to the gym. Write a task analysis* (for staff to follow) for James to catch a bus to the gym from his family home. (The teacher will provide Examples). Bus stops are located on the street in front of James’ home and the gym?
- What training/instructional strategies would you use to teach James travel training skills? (Hint: you need to include at least three types of prompts that you would use with James and an example of each)
- Explain when and how you would appropriately withdraw support throughout this learning process?
- How many travel training trials do you think it would take to determine whether James has learnt the skill?
