As Myers notes, the desire for the perception of control over ourselves and our environment is a very strong one

Psychology Sep 01, 2020

As Myers notes, the desire for the perception of control over ourselves and our environment is a very strong one.  In fact, we will go so far as to convince ourselves that we are in control over events that occur by random.  Moreover, as suggested by the research described in the link above, we may even extend that illusion further by handing over control to others we deem to be highly lucky.  That is, we sometimes exhibit “illusion of control by proxy.”

This article reviews the idea of the illusion of control. The idea that people believe I luck and the power of someone saying they feel lucky. A study was done by researchers that involved university students. The students believed they were working with other participants, but they were working with researchers. The researchers told the students they felt particularly lucky, but the control group did not hear such a message. The article discusses how the students who believed the other participant was lucky were more likely to allow that person to gamble for them, pick a card, or make the spin on the roulette table. The comments at the bottom of this article give insight into the different ways the illusion of control does not make sense. Dr. David Luke mentioned the illusion of control is a matter of opinion. Someone believes they are lucky and that is their opinion. Researchers may not believe that luck is real but to those who believe they are having a lucky streak; luck is very much so real. It will continue to play a part in how they conduct themselves in certain situations. The last comment gives a more relaxed opinion on the illusion of control. The example of the teammate who hits targets significantly more often than the rest of the team is reason enough to feel good about that team member being present. Relying on him is not what they do but they know they can trust he will make the situation better.
