Viva Las Vegas!
Although numerous states currently permit gambling in the United States, no city comes close to glamorizing gambling like Las Vegas, Nevada. From 1931 until 1976, the only state that had legalized casino gambling was the state of Nevada, and no city in the U.S. had more casinos than Las Vegas. Today, Las Vegas is of course known for gambling, but it is also known for world-class restaurants, entertainment, and shopping. Practically every hotel on the Las Vegas Strip is its own mini-city, with stores, restaurants, and, in some cases, even a roller coaster! In 2012, for example, over 39 million people visited Las Vegas (I was one of them, by the way).
So, what has made Las Vegas into the tourism mecca that it is today? Well, many people have contributed significantly to the Las Vegas hotels, casinos, and/or the entertainment that tourists have come to enjoy. Some of that impact may not necessarily be positive, however, as many of the early owners of casinos on the Las Vegas Strip were members of organized crime families.
For this paper, I want you to write a short biography on a person that had a significant impact on some aspect of Las Vegas. Although that person may have had other significant accomplishments outside of Las Vegas, I want you to focus on that person’s impact on Las Vegas, though you can mention the outside accomplishments if they are relevant. After doing this, I want you to give your opinion on that person’s impact; namely, was/is Las Vegas better off because of the accomplishments of this person? Why or why not?
