PROJECT1

Rhetorically Effective Job Search Writing (individual)

OBJECTIVES

As you are moving into your careers, you will need to write various documents to conduct your job search, including resumes and cover letters. The purpose of this assignment is to have you practice writing rhetorically-effective job search documents.

ASSIGNMENT

Find a particular job for which you want to apply. Write a resume and cover letter for that particular job. Then, annotate the resume and cover letter discussing your rhetorical choices.

PART 1: JOB SEARCH DOCUMENTS

For this portion of the assignment, you will submit the following three texts in one Google Drive document in this order:

  1. The job description or advertisement (cut and paste or scan the original job advertisement into the document; do not include any links);
  2. A cover letter for the position;
  3. A resume for the position.

PART 2: ANNOTATIONS

After completing the resume and cover letter, you will annotate them according to the below instructions:

  1. Annotate your Cover Letter:
    1. Identify, highlight, and describe six rhetorical choices you made, at least one from each Rhetorical Choice of the following categories: Language & Style, Genre & Format, and Claims & Evidence.
    2. Underneath each identified choice (in the same comment box), justify why this is an effective choice based on either your audience, purpose, persona, or context for the letter.
  2. Annotate your Resume:
    1. Identify, highlight, and describe six rhetorical choices you made, at least one from each Rhetorical Choice of the following categories: Language & Style, Genre & Format, and Claims & Evidence.
    2. Underneath each identified choice (in the same comment box), justify why this is an effective choice based on either your audience, purpose, persona, or context for the resume.

The below is an example for how you might annotate your texts:

AUDIENCE & PURPOSE

Obviously, your rhetorical audience for your letter and resume is the person or people to whom you are applying, and your purpose is to get an interview.

The audience for the annotations is me, your instructor; your purpose is to demonstrate your rhetorical awareness of your own writing.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Submission

As noted above, your submission of all three texts should be in the same Google Drive document. Title your file name “Project 1 - Job Search.”

Any submission that does not include all three of the above listed texts will automatically receive a non-passing grade.

EVALUATION & DRAFTS

Workshops & Feedback

You will have an opportunity to receive feedback from your classmates during in-class workshops. As always, I am available to discuss your work during office hours.

Submission Draft  (200 pts)

You will submit a document that meets all requirements listed above by the due date and time listed on the syllabus. Any draft not meeting all requirements will lose points.
