As a result of the COVID-19 global pandemic, the United States is currently in a recession. The most telling statistic to illustrate this is strong job losses during 2020. In March and April 2020, a total of more than 22 million jobs were lost (Bureau of Labor Statistics). More than 9 million jobs have since been added in May, June, and July, but the current level of jobs is the lowest in decades. Additionally, the unemployment rate in April was 14.7 percent, which was the highest rate ever recorded. It has fallen to 10.2 percent by July 2020, but this is still the highest rate since 1983.
