Bureaucracies

COLLAPSE

Max Weber suggested that  bureaucracy, while intended to maximize efficiency in tasks and organizations, could also be highly irrational.  He coined the term "iron cage of bureaucracy" to talk about the web of rules and regulations he feared would ensnare modern societies and individuals.  Members of society often feel trapped and dehumanized by bureaucracies.  However, bureaucracies are meant to maintain social order and foster the smooth working of institutions through the creation of rules and regulations.

Explain this paradox using an example of your own encounters with an “iron cage” of bureaucracy.  Use some of the characteristics of bureaucracies in your discussion.

Bureaucracies

COLLAPSE

The Iron cage is basically a concept which describes the fact that people are kept under control for maintaining a harmony on society. People are kept in calculated controlled measures so that productivity of the entire society can be increased. This term is thought to be linked with Bureaucracy. It means that bureaucracy tried to keep people in control so that an organized behavior can be extracted out from their skills. It becomes necessary to maintain an order in society. Such work concept made people more efficient. It also focused on setting up for a system in which there remained an element of equality in dominant form. It reduced favoritism. There is also a fact that bureaucracy becomes uncontrolled then it may become harmful for the entire society because in those circumstances, people just become numbers and stats. They are not treated as living people and rational aspects change into irrational ones. Bureaucracy mainly focused on keeping people together so they can work collectively to accomplish a common goal. Tasks of major magnitudes can be executed with an ease through following the rational rules and regulations of bureaucracy.
