Your Texas Legislators; GOVT 2306

In this assignment, you will find out who your state representative and state senator are and learn a bit more about them. You will begin the assignment by finding some basic information about your state representative and your state senator. Then, you will look more closely at the legislative priorities of your House and Senate members.

Instructions: Add your answers to this document. Save your work as a word or pdf file. Upload your completed assignment by clicking on the provided link.

1. Find your TX House Representative and Senator by going to http://www.house.state.tx.us/members/find-your-representative/ and filling in your address.

Most of you will get a result that clearly identifies you State Representative and your Texas Senator, but some of you will get a result that looks like this.

If this happens, first try alternative spellings of your street name. If that fails, click on the words “State Representatives”, and you will get a map of the districts. Use this map to figure out which district your house is in. If you cannot figure out your district, just choose one of the districts’ representatives to write about.

2. Once you have found your Texas state House and Texas Senate members*, find and enter the information asked for into the grid below. You should be able to find most of the information with the links listed by numbers 2 and 4, but you might have to Google your representatives to get some of the information.

Texas House of Representatives                                  Texas Senate

Name of legislator

District number

Political party

Years served

*Make sure to use your state representative and state senator, not your US House and Senate members. I would not use John Carter but would use James Talarico, my State Representative who isn’t listed but who I would find using the above outlined method, and Charles Schwertner.

3. Go to http://www.house.state.tx.us/members/ and click on your representative’s name. Find the bills authored by your Texas House Representative. Answer the following questions:

a.            How many bills did your member author or joint author?

_______________

b. By just scanning the captions of the bills authored or co-authored by your House member, what seem to be your House member’s top 2 legislative policy priorities? That is, did most of the bills deal with abortion, education, taxes, regulation on business, or the structure of government, etc. (Ignore motions to recognize of honor anyone.)

________________ and _________________

c. Pick one bill that deals with a social or economic public policy issue and describe what the bill would have done. (Click on the bill number, then choose the “text” tab, and finally open the bottom version of the bill.)

d.            Based on your Representatives legislative priorities and the bill you looked at, do you think this person is a good representative for you? Explain why or why not.

4. Now do the same things for your state senator. Go to http://www.senate.texas.gov/members.php, and click on your Texas Senator’s name. Click on the “Bill” link (keep it on 86R) at the top, left corner of the page. Answer the following questions:

a.            How many bills did your member author or joint author?

______________
