In this assignment, you will work to create an official report for President Harry S

Management

In this assignment, you will work to create an official report for President Harry S. Truman with your recommendations and reflections on the use of the atomic bomb against Japan.

Step 1: Prepare by looking over Chapter 24 of the American Yawp textbook (Links to an external site.) and looking at the template I created for the assignment

. (Note: The textbook is not a primary source.)

Step 2: Then prepare your recommendation, including:

  1.  Problem Statement - Identify the problems involved in choosing to drop the Atomic Bomb on Japan as the end of World War II approaches. In other words, if Truman chooses to drop the bomb, why is this problematic?  If he chooses not to drop the bomb, why is this problematic?
  2. Strategic Frameworks - Identify at least two potential strategies for approaching this decision.  In other words, identify two possible guiding frameworks for making the final decision.  Should we be looking at this from a political perspective? A military perspective? Morality perspective?  Choose two of these, or two that you come up with on your own.
  3. Possible Solutions - Identify at least two possible solutions you would propose to the president concerning his decision about the atomic bomb and clearly describe them.
  4. Potential Outcomes (Risk/Rewards) - Discuss the possible consequences of the the solutions you provided the president - both good and bad - and state your final recommendation on how you feel he should proceed and explain why.
  5. Throughout the recommendation, you should reference at least 4 primary sources, which can be found at the links below:

Step 3: Prepare an aftermath report, a reflection of the foreseeable consequences of Truman's decision. Given that we know Truman decided to drop the atomic bomb, complete this reflection with that in mind. Your reflection should include:

  1. Impact of Solution and Reflection on Decision - From your perspective, reflect on the impact of President Truman's decision to drop the atomic bomb.  Think about this decision's impact on America (society, politics, economy) and the impact on the globe (foreign policy).  Lastly, having been part of the decision-making process (hypothetically), reflect on whether you believe President Truman ultimately made the right decision and explain why.

Step 4: Format your paper to make sure you have met all the following criteria:

      • At least 2 pages plus bibliography, double-spaced, Times New Roman 12-point font
      • Include academic citations using Chicago Notes and Bibliography (Chicago NB) style for both primary and secondary sources (see sample citations for Books (Links to an external site.) or Web Sources (Links to an external site.) here).
          • You can use APA or MLA instead, if you're more familiar with those. Just make sure you are doing citations in one of the academic formats.
      • Make sure you have referenced at least 4 primary sources from one or more of the sites provided above.
