Watch the lecture video about Reading a Play in the module from this week.
After reading, post your thoughts below. You can use the questions as jumping off points or write about something else from the play which interested you.
- How do you feel about Torvald's treatment of Nora?
- Who is the more significant female character in terms of plot development, Nora or Kristine? Which do you prefer? Who are you rooting for as the play moves on?
- Does the play end the way you expected? Do you think this was a happy ending? What would you do differently, if anything?
- Which actress would you cast as Nora if you were to stage a production of A Doll's House? Who would play Torvald? Why is the choice of actor important to the role?
Reply below with your thoughts. Please go deeper than "I liked it" or "I didn't like it". I want to know your thoughts. So do your fellow students.
Reply must be at least 250 words.
When you are done with your post, reply to another learner's post, reflecting on the movie you watched and their thoughts. Keep posts on topic and respectful. You must reply to a post in order to get full points.
Torvald has treated Nora like a toy through out their marriage. He was enraged at his wife over Krogstad's letter exposing the truth about Nora, but when he got an apology letter from the same person, he took back everything he said and pretended that nothing happened. Just like Nora's dad, Torvald loves Nora as a possession, not really as a person. This results in Nora feeling like an object that has been passed down to a stranger after her dad's death. Out of all of the characters that are more significant, Nora would have to be that significant character. I see her grow as a character during the last act and realize that she needs to reevaluate her life in the end. The ending is bitter sweet because on one hand, she tries to find herself after eight years of meaningless marriage, but on the other hand, she left her husband and three children during the night of Christmas eve. I would not change the ending because it had a satisfying resolution to Nora, even if it raises questions about the aftermath for Torvald and her children. If I were to make a staged production of A Doll's House, the actress for Nora would have to be Sara Bareilles. She's got the looks and the energy like Nora and she's got the voice that fits her well. I feel like Hugh Jackman would fit perfectly for the roll as Torvald because he has this rough voice that feels like a manipulative husband. The fact the Hugh had also done a Broadway show is an added bonus. These rolls are very important because the character has to be represented properly and feel like that they are real.
