Week 4 Discussion - Native American representation in communities
In Nicole Bowermans writing "Cultural Differences of Teaching and Learning." , she makes a great parallel to Tara Houska's Ted Talk, "The Standing Rock resistance and the fight for our indigenous rights." They both write and speak about the importance of educating Native Americans within the current educational system, so that they are greater represented within all communities. So that they will continue to be doctors, engineers, scientists, lawyers, etc. And furture Native people will be active both in thier Native tribes, but also in non-native populations. Tara Houska, indirectly, mentions that she went to school to become an adovate to the Native American communities.
Bowerman further notes the possible difficulty that might arise due to the cultural differences when it comes to teaching and learning. She goes into researching the current cirriculums and how Native sources could be intergrate. I found Bowermans piece to be absolutely fascinating. I imagined a hybridized school for Native Americans, one that would qwell both needs for traditional and non-Native teachings. Bowerman and Houska mention the lack of statistics measured for Natives and also the lack of research on an educational front. Here is another differrence in mainstream education compared to Native education - " The primary difference between Indian and mainstream resources is that mainstream sources are the most frequently used, are most widely accepted and recognized, and therefore have the most influence to shape educational research, policy, and practice. Indian resources are often absent, require an exorbitant amount of time, and have a unique cultural process that is very different than the processes used by PK–12 and postsecondary organizations and systems."
