CLOSE READING PHOTOGRAPHS IMPORTANT TERMS AND GUIDED PRACTICE THINGS TO REMEMBER • Close reading photography, like close reading comics, begins with viewer identification – the reader’s receptivity to an image or series of images. • A photo is “a duplication of social reality;” it’s an image of a moment that really happened. • Each aspect/element of a photography contributes to its meaning – and that meaning can change over time depending on changes in context and social classifications. IMPORTANT TERMS • Composition – all of the visual elements in a photograph. • Foreground – “the part of a view that is nearest to the observer, especially in a picture or photograph,” (MerriamWebster). • Background – “the area or scenery behind the main object of contemplation (focus),” (MerriamWebster).
