Mintzberg described organisations as being political arenas. Organisational politics are often referred to in the pejorative, so if organisations are political arenas, this implies a negative impact on organisational performance. On the other hand, Pfeffer has described organisational politics as necessary to ‘get things done’.

What are organisational politics? Are organisational politics a positive or negative influence on organisations, or, perhaps, just a ‘necessary evil’? Do political ‘games’ in organisations lead to better or poorer outcomes?
