WRITING ASSIGNMENT FORMAT: • • • 400 to 500 word essay Double-spaced, 12 point font, 1 inch margins Include a heading, with your name, date and class name INSTRUCTIONS: The main objective of this writing assignment is to incite students to contemplate their personal futures and introspectively consider the life that they wish to be living one day, as they move into middle adulthood and/or late adulthood. Please know that the focus of this reflection should avoid being exclusively about what someone is going to “own” or even what someone is going to “complete” by that future time. Instead, the emphasis should be on how someone is going to “be” - in terms of their human relationships, responses to life’s difficulties and stress, emotional health, social activism, spiritual development, work satisfaction, etc. In order to help you ponder these types of questions, you are being asked to complete the following two acvities: (NOTE: your reflections on the two activities described below should be incorporated into only one essay, NOT two separate ones) 1. For the first part of this writing assignment, you will conduct an interview of a person in late adulthood: Think of an adult that you know, who is over the age of 60. Either in person, by telephone, Zoom, Skype or through any other means, ask him/her the types of questions listed below, plus any others that you would like to add. Within your essay, you may include the age of the person whom you interviewed, but please maintain his/her identity anonymous. In other words, do not include the person's name or anything else that will reveal who they are. SAMPLE QUESTIONS TO ASK: • As you reflect upon your life, what do you believe to have been your most meaningful experiences? • If you had to live your entire life again, what would be one (or more) thing that you would do differently? • What is the best general advice that you would give to a younger adult, so that he/she can create a sense of fulfillment and live more happily? Within your essay, reflect upon your interviewee’s responses and discuss what insights or wisdom you obtained from listening to someone who is older than you. How has this interview impacted what will be of importance or value to you, as you grow older? 2. For the second part of this writing assignment, you will use this link: selfcounseling.com - Characteristics of a Self-Actualizing Person Here, you will access a website where you will find a list of “characteristics of selfactualizing people” derived from psychologist Abraham Maslow’s work. You will then use Dr. Boyum's assessment to rate yourself according how closely or effectively you believe that you incorporate these characteristics into your being (who you are). Many people believe that living one's life by exhibiting these types of traits will increase the likelihood that one will have a smooth, joyful and rewarding transition into mid-life and beyond. Within your essay and based on any insights obtained by completing this assessment, you may address these types of questions (plus any others you wish to add): • • • Among these characteristics, which ones seem to already define who you are? Give examples of why you believe this. Which of the characteristics sound the least like you? How might you develop these in yourself? Is there anything additional, which may not be included within these characteristics, that you believe would enhance the experience of fulfillment in your life?
