Art Final Project Digital Technology and Art in the 21st Century Introduction The worldwide digital advancement is providing unexpected creative opportunities for new ways and languages of being a human. Cultures introduced by Web-3.0 have exposed the potential for new reasoning, thoughts, and formulation of logic. The technology allows artists to build taxonomies and connect concepts that would have been monumentally complex with older technologies. It enables them to create and post their work to audiences that have no physical boundaries. It allows the artists to gain sovereignty to address their ideas while controlling the people who benefit from their creations. Now artists can own online platforms where they share their content and benefit from it. This has resulted in the creative industry's growth with new formulations of technological designs and aesthetics that are extrinsic and intrinsic to objects, physical place, sounds, movements, images, and cultural practices. However, access to these digital technologies is complex because of uneven economic distribution, social inequalities, and political instabilities worldwide. This matter can be addressed by developing a philosophy of technology and arts to explore their relationships. It would also help understand the of culture on the philosophy. It is significant to figure out how creative and digital innovations can be activated in ICT and arts without eradicating the cultural meaning of arts that existed traditionally. This research paper will explore digital technology application on images and film production has influenced art in the 21st Century to how they articulate creativity. Research Question How have digital images and film production has transformed art in the 21st Century? Objectives 2 More than fifty years ago, the invention of the camera transformed the view of people on art. The painting was the most respected and famous form of art before the camera. However, when photography was introduced and challenged, the painting was the only way the appearance of a person or object could be replicated. Today more changes have taken place in the field of art, especially in the wake of digital transformation. Artist has expanded their creative possibilities through technology. Creation and editing of artistic work have become easy. Complex software and hardware capabilities have created numerous opportunities for artists across the world. There are tools for creating animations, streaming content, still images, audio tracks, and digital illustration in an easy way (Henriksen et al., 2016). This research's main objective is to discuss the work of Cassils to derive an understanding of how digital technology has impacted the field of art in the 21st Century. Additionally, the research will explore how the philosophy of technology and articulate art creativity beyond instrumental language influence the radical formation of living and learning. Discussion For the purpose of understanding how digital technology has transformed art in the 21st Century, an interview was arranged with Cassils, one of the most prolific artists in the modern era. Understanding Cassils' artwork would be critical in debunking the transformation of art from traditional forms and methods to modern methods and forms. There are a couple of artworks that Cassils has presented in the last decade. The first one is titled Hard Times, whereby in the performance, the artist wearing a prosthetic mask that provides an appearance of eyes that have been ripped out of their sockets (Cassils, n.d). The artist is also wearing a pink body thong, blonde wig and dark tan. Cassils stands on a wooden platform performing bodybuilding flexes and poses as a way to show off muscular contractions and body shape for six 3 minutes in slow motion. The entire performance is made cinematic through the application of digital technologies such as film-set lighting, special effects makeup, ambient soundtrack and special effect crew. The art was screened in four countries' cultural festivals because of the global advancement of information and communication. It was screed in Cairo, Egypt, Hong Kong, China, Nijmegen, Holland, and Koulikoro, Mali. Hard Times performance was intended to convince people about the exertion and effort required to create and maintain physical image linking to the idea of film production and consumer culture (Cassils, n.d). The second artwork of Cassils is titled Becoming An Image. This performance depicts a 2000 pound of clay sitting at the center of a black-pitched room (Cassils, n.d). During the performance, Cassils is wearing skin-like underwear and then proceeds to physically modify the block of clay by using force to punch and kick the clay with an intention to alter its form. The photographer uses sporadic camera flashes to illuminate the process offering the viewers glimpses of change while burning the momentary images on the viewers' retina. The application of digital technology, in this case, is achieved by allowing the audience to see the images between the camera flashes as they diminish with the eyes readjusting to the dark view. In this performance, Cassils wanted to allude to the violence transgender people experience around the world (Cassils, n.d). The modification of the clay block using force represents the perseverance that transgender people have to survive. The use of camera flashes is used to construct the performance carefully, implicating the witnesses into the dialogue. The third artwork of Cassils is titled Cuts: A Traditional Sculpture. The performance involved Antin undertaking an extreme and strict diet that was aimed and losing weight for a period of forty-five days. During the whole time, she was 4 documenting her body transformation on a daily basis by taking photographs naked from different angles. Additionally, Cassils also adopted another strict routine of dieting and bodybuilding exercise. However, in this effort, she was not trying to lose weight but to gain twenty-three pounds of muscles in twenty-three weeks. Both of them documented their progress through the application of digital technology that resulted in video illustrations, a grid of images, magazines, watercolors, and all exhibited in various world events (Cassils, n.d). Both Antin and Cassils had a message that they wanted to send through their subverts and references. Antin's performance was a representation of what is traditionally known as feminine (weight loss), while Cassils performance was a representation of what is traditionally known to be masculine (muscle building). The use of the term "Cuts" on the title also has an artistic meaning. It is used intentionally to highlight Cassils exercises as a way to cut musculature instead of being cut using a surgical knife. The artist demonstrates that being a transgender person, one does not need to transform one body through surgery or hormonal injections. Exercise and nutrition can also be applied to alter the physical appearance of transgender people (Cassils, n.d). The last artwork that was discussed during the interview with Cassils was titled Inextinguishable Fire. The artist stands on a sound stage with arms outstretched in this performance, wearing a flame-retardant white suit before a backdrop painted by a sunset. Cassils stays in this pose for fourteen seconds until two men emerge and puts out the fire. The performance was recorded at 1000 frames per second using a Phantom camera of high speed. It was then transformed into a fourteen-minute video screening the scene in slow motion (Cassils, n.d). The video starts by extremely closing up the center of Cassils' chest then zooming out to show the full scene before 5 repeating and rewinding. The film was created first is also screened immediately after the live version of the Inextinguishable Fire. Cassils explains that people are subjected to many images in modern days such that it is difficult to think critically and analyze the images (Cassils, n.d). The artist says that people today like articles on Twitter and Facebook because they are based on fleeting headlines. Reading articles is not fashionable anymore. Cassils acknowledges that digital technology has transformed the field of art. The philosophy of art and technology has been entangled and can no longer be separated (Mocan, 2018). The artist argues that creating a film where the audience thinks it's looking at a traumatized body, but at the end, it realizes that it is looking at an image made to manipulate its thinking that the film is all about a traumatized body. This helps in influencing people to think critically about image construction and pay more close attention to the construction. The film's juxtaposition against the live performance helps Cassils move the audience one step forward and force them to bear witness to the sounds, sight, and smells of real traumatic events instead of viewing the performance as a purely mediated form. Finally, Cassils concluded by saying that the act of watching has become critically useful in modern arts (Cassils, n.d). Digital illustrations, images, sounds, live performance, and artwork sharing have taken the art field's core in the modern days by creating more meaning and interaction between cultures and ideologies (Mocan, 2018). Conclusion Digital technology and art in 21st Century have become two concepts that cannot be separated. The audience, artists, and consumers have changed their view of art as just a thing of physicality in the interaction between the producers, promoters, and consumers of art. Art can now be enjoyed and share over the internet by millions 6 of people. Social media especially has become an integral platform for creating and sharing artwork from different parts of the world. Cultures have been shared among people from different localities like never before. Therefore technology is transforming the art world, and the change is expected to continues as time goes. 7 References Cassils. (n.d). Cassils.
