ENG1002: ECE RESIT CLIENT DESIGN BRIEF
1: INTRODUCTION OF THE PROBLEM
The importance of climate change is widely recognised by governments and international organisations, and in May 2019 the UK and other countries declared a climate emergency. The emission of greenhouse gases is considered to be the main cause of climate change and these emissions largely originate from burning fossil fuels. Therefore, sources of energy which do not use fossil fuels have been developed by
engineers at an extremely fast rate in recent years. In the UK, for example, around 33% of electricity is
now generated from renewable energy, up from 7% in 2010 (see live updates at
https://electricinsights.co.uk/). This increase is largely driven by wind power. According to the Offshore
Valuation group, if the UK offshore resource was developed still further to tap the full practical potential,
offshore renewables could provide six times the current UK levels of demand and enable the UK to
become an energy exporting nation again by 2050. This is equivalent to a billion barrels of oil per year,
or the same as the average annual output of UK North Sea oil and gas production seen over the past four
decades – resulting in cumulative carbon dioxide savings of 1.1 billion tonnes by 2050. Your design task
is concerned with generating electrical power from the wind.
2: DESIGN TASK
You are tasked with designing the communication and sensor system for a prototype wind turbine, which is a scale version of an industrial turbine (to be placed on land). The system must take the outputs from speed, voltage and current sensors located on the turbine and use an Arduino to transmit the data, via
Bluetooth, to a Microsoft Go 2. The Microsoft Go 2 will display the data in a Graphical User Interface, also to be designed as part of this project. Together, these elements form a monitoring and diagnostic system for the turbine, which would allow users to check the correct operation of the turbine.
3: RESOURCES AVAILABLE TO ASSIST DESIGN
You should draw upon knowledge from the sessions delivered in Semester 1 (including: design process, ethics, sustainability, CAD) and Semester 2 (including: Matlab, online labs). This material can be found electronically on Canvas in the ENG1002 module.

4: DESIGN REQUIREMENTS: ELECTRONICS AND COMPUTER ENGINEERING (ECE) ASPECTS
You will be building a monitoring and diagnostic system; you must code the Arduino to process the sensor data and transmit it via Bluetooth to your Microsoft Go 2. Then you must also design a GUI in
Java that displays the voltage, current and speed sensor data, and calculates and displays the electrical power in Watts.
You must write a short 10-page report explaining how you would process the sensor data using an
Arduino and output it to the GUI, presenting your Java source code and the GUI. This must be your own work.
This task will be in five sections:
? Overview of the communication system
Provide an overview of the Bluetooth communication system of the Arduino Nano IoT 33 and how it
is suitable to communicate with a Microsoft Go 2
For this create paragraph with accompanying images to explain how it works.
? Programming the Arduino Nano IoT 33 to process the inputs from the Wind Turbine system
Input 1: DC voltage between 0V and +3.3V representing voltage from the wind turbine of 0V to
32V. This would be applied to pin A0
Input 2: DV voltage between 0V and +3.3V representing a current from the Wind Turbine
between –10A and +10A. This would be applied to pin A0
Input 3: Pulse waveform of 1kHz representing a rotation on the shaft of the Wind Turbine of
2000RPM if 1 revolution produces 30 pulses from the sensor. This would be applied to pin D0
ENG1002: ECE RESIT ASSESSMENT SUBMISSION
1: DESIGN TASK
The details of the design task to be completed, are provided in the “ENG1002 – ECE Resit Client Brief”
document. Please ensure that you have read this fully before reading this document, which outlines the
submission requirements.
2: SUBMISSION
The design task will be assessed via an individual report submission. You are required to submit this
report as a MS Word file on Canvas.
3: INDIVIDUAL REPORT FORMAT
Your report must look professional and be legible if printed on A4, i.e. should have reasonable margin
sizes and font/text sizes. You should follow the table on the next page, with regards to the length of
report and what is required in each section.
Within the report, you should carefully consider how to communicate and explain your system design to
the client. You may choose to do this through hand-drawn sketches, CAD drawings, or similar. You
should also explain any decisions, or assumptions, that you have made. Remember, we are looking for
a well-reasoned and well-justified design. We are expecting to see the design iterations that have led to
your final design.
4: MARKS ALLOCATION
Marks will be awarded as shown below; a full marking scheme will be available via the submissio
