Speech 5 the Advocate Purposes of the Advocate The purposes of this speech are these: (a) to establish competence in the basics; (b) to develop competence in building speaker ethos through practice, delivery, and research; and (c) to establish a higher speaker ethos through synthesis. Instructions • Review Chapters 5 and 8 to understand how to read the audience and reason. • Review Chapter 16.3 to generate general ideas about speech content. • Review Chapters 6 and 7 to choose a topic and create a specific purpose. • Review Chapter 14 to select and arrange the main and supporting points. **NOTE: You must have 5 sources for this speech. Review Chapters 9-11 to construct your outline and post it by the due date. Your outline must be typed with a decent font, 12-size, at least one full page. Your outline must also pass with 80% this time; if not, your grade will be affected. Practice your speech at least three times before you record yourself. Pick out the right attire, somewhere between business casual and professional. Make sure you have PowerPoint of some kind (see Chapter 15). Students need to find their own audience at home; at least 1 person at home can work as an audience.
