Speech 5 the Advocate Purposes of the Advocate The purposes of this speech are these: (a) to establish competence in the basics; (b) to develop competence in building speaker ethos through practice, delivery, and research; and (c) to establish a higher speaker ethos through synthesis. Description of the Advocate This speech covers all pertinent chapters in the book. Student speeches should be 3.5 to 4 minutes long. Students are advocates. They must represent a non-profit agency and speak for their needs and betterment; therefore, a call to action is required. This speech is much like a Shark Tank speech except students are advocates and not making a sales pitch. Instructions • Review Chapters 5 and 8 to understand how to read the audience and reason. • Review Chapter 16.3 to generate general ideas about speech content. • Review Chapters 6 and 7 to choose a topic and create a specific purpose. • Review Chapter 14 to select and arrange the main and supporting points. **NOTE: You must have 5 sources for this speech. Each source must be quoted in the outline and cited in the bibliography in APA format, not MLA. • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • Review Chapters 3, 12, and 15 to learn how to better present your speech. Review Chapters 9-11 to construct your outline and post it by the due date. Your outline must be typed with a decent font, 12-size, at least one full page. Your outline must also pass with 80% this time; if not, your grade will be affected. Practice your speech at least three times before you record yourself. Pick out the right attire, somewhere between business casual and professional. Make sure you have PowerPoint of some kind (see Chapter 15). Students need to find their own audience at home; at least 1 person at home can work as an audience. If you don’t have access to a live audience, please have people login to a Zoom meeting and watch you give your speech. In your speech recording, at the beginning, show your audience on the video; then, proceed with your speech. Make sure you are standing up and addressing your audience. Upload your video and outline to Canvas under “Speech 1 the Introduction.” Speech uploads can be difficult for some so try .MOV files for best results. If this doesn’t work, upload your speech to youtube.com, set it as “Unlisted,” and send me the link through Canvas email. If your file doesn’t upload to email, resave it under a lower resolution. Attention Getter: Restrictions on movement in countries around the world have forced people to stay more at home, leading to a surge in cases of domestic violence. III. Thesis: Domestic violence causes serious physical and mental injury and even death to the victims. Therefore, NNEDV has been working to stop domestic violence. IV. Preview: Body I. Amanda Taub, a writer of The New York times, said coronavirus poses another public health crisis, and there is growing data suggesting that domestic abuse, like opportunistic infections, is thriving in the wake of the pandemic (Taub, 2020). According to WHO, globally, one out of every three women in the world will experience physical and/or sexual violence by an intimate partner in their lifetime (COVID-19 and violence against women). During the pandemic, people cut down on outdoor activities and stayed at home for a long time, leading to close relationships between families and more friction in life, which aggravated violent behaviors in family relationships. The National Network to End Domestic Violence (NNEDV) is a non-profit organization founded in 1990 that addresses many aspects of domestic violence (National Network to End Domestic Violence, 2021).
