BUSA 2106 Spring 2022 Research Paper Guidelines
TOPIC: ANTI SLAPP LAWS
You must follow these guidelines for your research paper. Your grade will suffer if
your paper does not adhere to the following structure:
(1) All research paper submissions must be turned in via "Assignments," which is
under the "Assessments" tab. All research papers are checked for plagiarism
through Turnitin. Any work or quotes that are not your work must be cited in-text
and included on the citations page at the end of your paper. Failure to cite will
cause a significant drop in your grade.
(2) Use my GSW email address to contact me with questions about this research
paper. If you think you need a phone conference, please email me, and provide
dates and times when you will be available.
(3) Your research paper must be typewritten in Times New Roman, 12-point
size font, double-spaced, and in paragraph form. Your paper MUST have no
more than 1-inch margins, top, bottom, and sides, including your first page.
If you turn in a paper with your name, the course name, my name, etc., and
take up 2 or 3 inches at the top of your essay, you will lose points. I only need
your name on your paper.
DO NOT ignore guideline 3.
(4) I can only receive documents completed using Microsoft WORD format or in
.txt or .pdf format. I am not an IT person, so do not ask me for computer advice. If
I cannot open your work, I cannot grade it. Please save all work you intend to
submit as a Word document, a .pdf document, or a text document.
(5) Proper use of English, grammar, and punctuation is required. Failing to use
appropriate English, grammar, and punctuation will result in a lower grade. Use
spell check and proofread before submitting any work you want to be graded.
I recommend that you download the free version of Grammarly and use it when
writing your paper. It is a great free tool. You can find Grammarly at

Topic and Style
The topic is Anti SLAPP Law (SLAPP is an acronym for Strategic Lawsuits
Against Public Participation. You will be able to find plenty of material on this
topic. Any internet search engine search will provide you with much more
information that you will need to research and write this paper.
WARNING: All papers will be examined for plagiarism by Turnitin's online
service. Turnitin is an amazingly accurate service that scans the entire internet for
copied works. If you cut and paste, you must cite the author. That is acceptable.
However, do not pass off someone else's work as your own. That is plagiarism, and
you will get a zero! Your analysis of what you have researched is critical to getting
a good grade!
The body of your paper must be no less than five (5) and no more than six (6)
pages, NOT including the citations page. You may use a cover page, but it does
not count toward your five-page minimum. Also, you must cite at least five (5)
different references. Internet search engines such as Google or Yahoo are helpful
as research tools and finding materials to cite. Still, search engines are NOT
appropriate to cite as references, nor is Wikipedia a proper reference to cite. You
may use Wikipedia for general information but remember that Wikipedia can be
wrong! You must cite any material you get from any source, whether it is a direct
or indirect quote. Place the author's name(s) after any information you get from
any source. Your paper and citations must be in MLA style. You are expected
to use proper grammar, spelling, and sentence structure.
How should you approach the research paper?
To quote the 17th-century French philosopher and mathematician Blaise Pascal
(1623- 1662), "I have made this letter longer than usual, only because I have not
had time to make it shorter." In other words, do not ramble and think that more is
better - it is not. Being concise and organized is generally more complicated than
the "shotgun approach." Being brief does not mean a short answer with little or no
content, but if I feel that you are bluffing your way through the paper, your grade
will suffer. I do not want several pages of how the topic personally affected you; I
want you to understand the topic and demonstrate that knowledge to me. You may
briefly include your personal opinions and actual work experience, with the word
"briefly" being key. Please remember that your research paper MUST be at least
five pages in length.
