Discourse #21 Woman Self-Portrait Here are two depictions of women, Woman is an Abstract Expressionist painting by William deKooning, and the other a self-portrait by the artist Jenny Saville, a Post-modern British painter. Abstract Expressionism was the first original American art style, making New York the new art center after WWII when it became a mission of art critics like Clement Greenberg to move America away from representation, the art that Hitler promoted. DeKooning was one of a group of Abstract Expressionist painters who broke new ground in painting. Jenny Saville was recognized for her talent and skill as early as her senior graduate show when Saatchi a wealthy London art gallery owner (Saatchi Gallery) purchased her whole senior show. Her work was part of the now famous Sensations Show (1997) at the Royal Academy in London. That show put London on the map as a very exciting hot spot for young innovative artists. Post-Modernism is all about new invention and originality in art and taking the past and re-thinking it, even appropriating it into a new way of seeing it in an artist’s work. We are not dealing with Appropriation in this assignment, but I could not leave it out of my discussion. Read the essays in all of the links, including links within links. Examine each painting in terms of style and meaning and discuss. Include in your discussion any influences you see in Saville’s work from periods you have studied in this course. Make sure that you support your assertions with visual description from the paintings. How does the Abstract Expressionist style impact on the meaning in each painting.
