Brief Guidelines:

You are required to complete a database project to show that you can apply what you have learned to a fictitious problem. The problem may be in a business context or in relation to an interest or hobby. You will also be asked to demonstrate your ability to design, implement and modify a database.

The database should contain at least two tables, one of which will have a minimum of 5 fields and a minimum of 25 records. The field types should consist of at least one-character field, one numeric and one other. You will need to set primary keys and at least one index.

You will need to include at least:

• Two tables, and establish a relationship between them
• A well-designed form
• Three relevant queries, one of which should use a logical operator (AND, OR, NOT)
• Four appropriate reports, one of which with sum and average calculations. Each report should be sorted or grouped or both.
• Labels with multiple fields

Assessment criteria

1. Design (20 marks)

• • Describe the aim of your project, with a description of the problem and a proposed solution
  • Specify the record structures, including field names, data type, field size, primary key
  • Design a data capture form
  • Design the screen layout
  • Specify queries and give purpose, table linked to, fields and conditions
  • Specify reports, including headings and contents
  • Specify labels

2. Implementation (25 marks)

• • Data accurately inputted
  • Relationship established between tables
  • Database used to sort, query and organise data effectively
  • Reports with headings and sum and average calculation accurately produced
  • Labels with multiple fields accurately produced
  • Database queries and reports saved and printed
  • Screen shots produced, where specified

3. Proposed modifications (5 marks)

• • List the aspects of your project that you are particularly pleased with
  • Suggest at least two modifications or improvements to the original design. Modifications should be illustrated using examples and diagrams where appropriate.

The assignment should be typed; the printouts should be included and soft versions of all files supplied.  The project should also be submitted on Moodle.  As always, you are required to retain a soft copy of all files.
