Writing

Format:

This will typically include the following sections, each of which starts on a new page: The paper should be between 1500-2000 words (around 8 pages). The cover page must include the word count.

  1. Page 1: Begin with a cover page (I can do this page, you don’t have to do it)
  2. Page 2: A short synopsis of the disease you’re going to cover, followed by the “key words” you used to find your information.
  3. Page 3- ? The body of your paper will include:
  • Paragraph format: (no lists, bullets, charts, or graphs).
  •  Double-space only, even between paragraphs.
  •  Use headings for the following nine (9) required sections: (1) Definition, (2) pathogenesis and (3) etiology, (4) clinical manifestation(s), (5) laboratory test, (6) diagnosis, (7) latest treatment(s), (8) and/or prevention and (9) prognosis. All of these must be shown in the paper

In-text citations: to be used in lieu of footnotes (page 8). Must give researchers credit to the references. Do not plagiarize the references, use your own words. Use quote marks when taken directly from your source and use sparingly. Do not begin a sentence with “According to....”, use your citation at the end of your sentence or paragraph instead.

Last Page: References or bibliography on a separate page. These must not be more than 3 years old.

SUGGESTED WEB SITES FOR THE RESEARCH PAPER

PROFESSIONAL JOURNALS & WEBSITES: Most will have “research article or study” written on the first page.

PLoSOne (excellent resource).,www.jama.org Journal of the American Medical Association www.nejm.org New England Journal of Medicine www.aafp.org Journal of Clinical Investigation, gogglescholar.com , Association of American Family Physicians www.pubmedcenral.nih

Other resources:

Annals of Internal Medicine CMAJ-Canadian Medical Association Journal Canadian Journal of Medicine Journal of Rheumatology British Medical Journal Lancet- (neurological medicine) MMRW: Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report Journal of Psychiatric Research

Do not use: Taber/Mosby/Stedman Dictionary, Merck Manual, Webmed, Wikipedia, CDC, Medline etc. Although these may be good sources, they do not reflect “scholarly science” and are published for the general public to read and not as research information. Do not use patient pamphlets or patient information articles, or blogs
