Irrespective of the settings in healthcare institutions, most nurses have experienced work incivility. Harmful outcomes and toxic working environments are crucial evidence of wok incivility in healthcare settings. Incivility includes bias, bullying, disruptive conduct, unfair conduct, harassment, and rudeness.

I have experienced incivility in my workplace, especially from my colleagues, which I later considered violence.  While on my duty, I recognized a reduced respiration status with a patient admitted and under my care, and I alerted the medical response team. When the critical care team arrived to assess the patient, they recognized that he was on do not resuscitate status and was on maximum BiPAP Settings. The urgent care team showed annoyance behaviors while rolling their eyes at me and making sarcastic remarks. I felt terrible and underrated as a healthcare professional. I believe in teamwork for quality outcomes, but in this case, the critical care staff did not cooperate with my situation; instead of helping me understand the patient’s condition, they undermined my capability and skills. Their comments lowered my self-esteem, and I felt incapable as a professional nurse and started doubting my ability to perform effectively. I felt offended and embarrassed. I responded by making the medical response team aware of their bad behavior, apologizing to them. I reassured them that I did not do anything wrong as I was only concerned about their situation. I also requested education from the management team to help nurses understand the significance of teamwork and eliminate toxic working environments. Workplace incivility can result in significant healthcare consequences such as increased employee turnover, loosing employees, and stress-related issues. Also, workplace incivility can result in high mortality rates in healthcare facilities as nurses fear to consult each other due to mistreatment and lack of confidence. The condition could have been prevented by educating nurses, letting nurses know the importance of teamwork and collaboration, and improving a culture of safety. Strategies that support a healthy work environment include communication, empowering team members, building trust, and empowering wellness. Also, education on achieving patient satisfaction and promoting quality helps in promoting a conducive working environment.
