You are writing for an online Tucson publication, so it is not necessary to include the state in your story. Brandon Wright, age 47, has been a Border Patrol agent for 18 years. Last year he was promoted to supervisor for the Nogales, Arizona sector. During his time with the Border Patrol, he has been commended on several occasions for his exemplary service. This is a press release you received this morning. It comes from the Arizona Department of Public Safety, the agency that oversees state police whose main mission is to patrol highways. Again, do not use the exact words provided. Use your own. Yesterday at about 4 pm, Arizona State Troopers detected a Ford van traveling at about 85 miles per hour, north on Interstate 10 in Tucson. Officers conducted a traffic stop. The driver was asked to step out of the vehicle. He was subsequently identified as Brandon Wright, 47, of Nogales. Officers discovered ten men seated in the vehicle. They were also asked to step out of the vehicle and identify themselves and provide identificantion documentation. However, none appeared to understand English and did not offer any form of identification. At that point, Wright identified himself as a U.S. Border Patrol supervisory agent. Asked about his passengers, Wright said that they were illegal aliens who he was transporting to the Phoenix federal detention center for deportation. Officers noted that Wright was not driving a Border Patrol vehicle. He explained that the Border Patrol did not have enough vehicles, so he was using his private van. The troopers contacted a Border Patrol supervisor in the Nogales sector office. He denied Wright had been authorized to transport anybody and was in fact on vacation. Several Border Patrol units from the Tucson office arrived on the scene and took Wright and his passengers into custody. You also have this statement from the Department of Homeland Security, which oversees the Border Patrol. You may selectively quote parts of the statement. The Border Patrol is comprised of men and women who safeguard our nation. Unfortunately, some fall tragically short of the Patrol’s high standards. Agent Wright will face state and federal charges that make it illegal to knowingly transport illegal aliens. It is unclear how the aliens aboard his vehicle entered the United States. Based on our investigation, Agent Wright violated the law. However, we leave it to Arizona State and federal officials to further investigate Agent Wright’s actions and determine his guilt or innocence. He has been charged with violation of state and federal laws that make it unlawful to transport illegal aliens. Agent Brown may have illegally brought the men into the United States. However, we were unable to conclusively determine whether he did. Consequently, we leave it to Arizona state and federal authorities to make that determination. Here is what Arizona law says about the crime: It is unlawful to transport or move or attempt to transport or move an alien in this state, in furtherance of the illegal presence of the alien in the United States, in a means of transportation if the person knows or recklessly disregards the fact that the alien has come to, has entered or remains in the United States in violation of the law. A person who violates this section is guilty of a class 1 misdemeanor and is subject to a fine of at least one thousand dollars, except that a violation of this section that involves ten or more illegal aliens is a class 6 felony and the person is subject to a fine of at least one thousand dollars for each alien who is involved. Federal law is quite similar, except that it imposes a minimum sentence of three years in prison for a first offense. It is important to make clear that Wright has not been charged with smuggling the men into the country. That matter is under investigation, and that is all your story should say. As you prepared to write your story, you received a phone call from Justin Vaughn, who identified himself as Agent Wright’s attorney. He said this: “My client has been wrongfully arrested and charged. He simply provided a ride to a group of foreign tourists who were stranded in Nogales after their tour bus left them behind. Mr. Wright was able to view their passports and visas which indicated they are in the country legally. So, he was not transporting undocumented immigrants. What arresting officers have alleged is untrue. He has violated no laws. We look forward to quickly resolving this matter. Mr. Wright will have a bail hearing tomorrow and we are optimistic bail will be granted.” Now write your story.
