In what ways did white and black Southerners react to Reconstruction?
Blacks were free but not equal because it was a difficult process for northerners and southerners who still practiced racism to understand the concept that white freedom meant the same as black freedom. Freedmen from the Union army were the leaders of blacks under Reconstruction. They had built churches and schools for themselves while also getting politically involved. Whites who took office in the Southern state governments were either called carpetbaggers or scalawags. There was Southern resistance and the concept of White Redemption. Whites created black codes, they didn't follow Congress' rules, and their resistance to Congressional Reconstruction and "Radical Rule" was violent. Groups like the KKK, Knights of White Camelia, and White League were created. Do you agree with this students post
Expert Solution
I do agree with this post.
Why?
I agree with the post because this period was so dangerous for blacks, when ironically, it should have been a great period
Blacks were now freed, and no longer had to deal with slavery
Unfortunately, now segregation took over and odious Black Codes, and these severely hurt blacks and made life hard when it should have been a smooth transition to free life
Southern whites did everything they could to make life hard for blacks, due to their bitterness over losing slavery and also due to lingering and inherent racism (hence groups like the KKK came into power)
They also wanted to profit however they could from blacks being freed, by subjecting them to this segregation and racism, and thereby these whites could prosper more by advancing their agenda in the political arena (blacks were also limited from voting, as well)
