Writing

Observational task
Your submission will be 800 words in length (- or + ten per cent is acceptable). The observational task is worth 20 per cent of your overall grade and is due via Turnitin on Friday May 14 11:59pm. The task: This task involves close description and interpretation of your experience of either cooking a meal or eating a meal. Your submission should use rich descriptive detail to explain: the food involved; the setting; the social aspects of that experience (if relevant); and the meanings of this food event. A great example of 'auto-ethnography' was provided by Sophiya Sharma in the Week 5, part 2 lecture.
In order to insightfully interpret the meaning of this food event, you will also need to move connect your personal observations to a broader literature: you are expected to reference one or two readings drawn from this unit as part of this task. You do not need to do any further research for this task.
Referencing: When it comes to your one or two sources you will need to use 'in-text' referencing. Place a citation in brackets in the text of the essay. For example: Geertz (1960: 13) made the point that... OR Geertz notes that, "Most of the food remains uneaten" (Geertz 1960: 13). Arrange the entries in your bibliography alphabetically by author's surname. The list should include all and only the references cited in the text. Underline or use italics for the titles of books and journals.
Please note: Unless a Special Consideration request has been submitted and approved, (a) a penalty for lateness will apply — two (2) marks out of 100 will be deducted per day for assignments submitted after the due date — and (b) no assignment will be accepted more than seven (7) days (incl. weekends) after the original submission deadline.
You will be assessed according to the following three criteria, which are equally weighted.
