Writing

Assignment Brief

You will focus on the way you use a specific aspect of pedagogy relevant to your age phase or subject to support learning. You will reflect on the way in which you encourage this approach for learning in your placement. Your understanding and critical reflection will be supported by literature from a range of sources in relation to your chosen aspect of pedagogy drawn from: placement experiences; Training; Intensive Training and Practice (ITAPs); Core Content Framework (CCF). Reference to background reading is essential and should be incorporated in all sections.

Your written style should be clear, concise and grammatically correct. We encourage you to access support through BlackBoard to develop this.

Total Word count – 5000 words

There are three sections to this assignment. These are as follows.

Part 1 Introductory literature review of your chosen focus including elements of critique of peer-reviewed journals, scholarly articles or similar materials

Part 2 Reflective analysis of your pedagogical approach based on interactions with pupils / children in your placement setting and the impact on learning

Part 3 A summary of what you have learned which draws together part 1 and part 2 with reference to the Teachers' Standards and your ongoing professional development

Ethical Approval (Formative)

You need to upload an ethical approval form to BB by an agreed deadline. This will include an up to 500-word formative piece, linked to Part 1 of the assignment based on initial readings and guidance from your mentor and tutors. This will allow you to receive specific feedback to support your writing and sign off your approach using ethical principles as outlined by BERA (2018).

Your 500-word piece will be a brief introduction about your chosen topic, justifying your rationale using the critique framework below to engage with underpinning theory.

You may choose to devote the bulk of the 500 words to a detailed critique of a single source (book or journal article) relevant to the aspect of pedagogy or you may wish to compare and contrast two or more sources.

Final assessment: This will be in the form of an essay in three parts, outlined in further detail below. Please ensure you include a reference list and appendices as necessary.

Part 1: Review of chosen literature

Included in a critical analysis of relevant literature should be elements of critique of peer-reviewed journals, scholarly articles or similar materials. Choose 2/3 articles within the last 10 years.

Critique framework:

• What is the author's purpose?

• What are the main claims?

• What are the implications for practice more broadly as well as for your specific learning environment?

• Are you convinced? Does the argument/evidence support the claims? Is the research reliable? What are the limitations?

• How does this link to wider research and your experiences?

Indicative word count: Part 1 - 1500 words

Part 2: Reflective reviews of your pedagogical approach

During your placement, identify and plan for opportunities to put your chosen pedagogical approach into practice. Analyse your interactions with children / pupils. These interactions may be within the context of any subject area and could be with a whole class or small group. Consider the impact of your interventions on pupil /children’s learning; evaluate the effectiveness of these, consider alternatives and identify strategies to consider next time.

Indicative word count: Part 2 – approx. 1500-2000 words

Part 3: Summary of what you have learned

This summary will show how you have made links between your reading, practice and conclusions. You will identify key principles/ideas/themes explored in your reading which emerged from your reflections on practice. You will find it useful to write in the first person when referring to your classroom experience. You should reflect on the Teachers' Standards to identify areas to support your ongoing professional development.

Indicative word count: Part 3 - approx. 1500-2000 words

Overall indicative word count - 5,000 words. If you exceed the word count by more than 10% the remaining text thereafter will be ignored irrespective of its merit.
