- Create and deliver a Commemorative speech
Commemorative speeches praise, honor, recognize, or pay tribute to a person, an event, an idea, or an institution. They are usually given in formal settings, such as banquets, receptions, retirement parties, special birthdays, memorial services, and rallies. The most common type of commemorative speeches is speeches of tribute that is given to honor someone. This type highlights a person’s exceptional value, qualities, contributions, or accomplishments. Your speech should be organized around two goals:
- Help the audience appreciate the importance of a person, an event, an idea, or an institution
- Illustrate for an audience a person’s unique achievements or the special impact of an event, idea, or institution
Topic
You will write and deliver a 6-8 minute presentation designed to help the audience appreciate the importance of a person, an event, an idea, or an institution and illustrate a person’s unique achievements or the special impact of an event, idea or institution. Choose a topic that is of interest to you and your audience. You must do the following to accomplish these two goals:
- Identify who or what you are commemorating (i.e., Name the person, event, idea, or institution being celebrated).
- Identify and describe the qualities or activities that make this person, event, idea, or institution special (i.e., Clearly state the unique characteristics or actions being commemorated).
- Identify and describe any obstacles the person, event, idea, or institution had to overcome to be successful. - Identify and describe your relationship to the person, event, idea, or institution being commemorated.
In addition, follow these guidelines for an effective commemorative speech:
- Share what is unique and special. It is your job to inform your listeners of these qualities by offering specific praise for your subject that consists of representative examples of successes, talents, accomplishments, special characteristics, and significant impacts. Be specific about the importance and meaning of who or what you are commemorating.
- Express sincere appreciation. Include in your speech sincere recognition of the ways in which who or what you are commemorating has affected a community. Your words should be genuine and express respect and gratitude.
- Tell the truth. Be certain the facts, stories, and traits you attribute to the subject of your commemoration are all accurate. When you commemorate a person, share your personal experience with that person so your audience can appreciate his or her exceptional qualities. When you commemorate an event, idea, or institution, share the characteristics that make your subject special in a way that appeals to your audience. Remember, when you give a commemorative speech, you want your audience to feel inspired and appreciative and to respect and admire who or what you are honoring.
Delivery/Notes
The commemorative speech as with all others, should be delivered extemporaneously (prepared and practiced but not memorized or read). Use only a speaking/delivery outline to jog your memory (4 x 6 index card). Do not write out whole sections (or the entire presentation) to use in your delivery. Again, do not read or recite your presentation. It should be obvious that you have practiced. Your delivery should include professional language, and a smooth voice free from fillers. You should also make meaningful eye contact and engage your audience. You must practice your speech to ensure that your delivery falls within the 6-8 minute time frame. You will have points deducted if your speech delivery falls outside of this time limit. Specifically, five points will be deducted for each 30-second interval where you fall over/under the time allotted (e.g., a speech of 5 minutes, 55 seconds will have five points deducted or a speech of 8 minutes, 16 seconds will have five points deducted).

You are required to utilize and cite a minimum of two CREDIBLE sources for this presentation. You must identify each source when you deliver your presentation, in the outline of the presentation, and on a reference list (APA style).

VIDEO FILE SUBMISSION:
Because our school has transitioned to online instruction, you will be recording yourself present your informative speech, and then uploading the video for me to grade.
IMPORTANT NOTE: This course is designed to give you practice in how to deliver presentations before a live audience. It is not intended for you to learn how to make YouTube videos or Vlogs (video logs). Therefore, for these speeches, you must be
STANDING, and you must present your speech as if you were presenting before a LIVE AUDIENCE. Please make sure that your visual aids are in sight of your recording. You can use your laptop right next to you to show your visual aids and record yourself using your phone camera.
This means no sitting and no reading your notes from your computer screen or from notes lying on the table. We must be able to see a head to waist view of you. It is perfectly okay to use 4” x 6” notecards as handheld speaker notes. If you need special accommodations and must be sitting for this presentation, you must provide official documentation form the student ACCESS Office: (808)-844-2392 at least one week before the first presentation is due.
Each speech must be delivered extemporaneously, meaning that the speech is delivered conversationally with the use of 4” x 6” notecards as handheld speaker notes. Reading your speech from your computer screen is not allowed. If it is determined that you are not using extemporaneous delivery, you will be asked to redo the entire presentation, and the late penalty will apply.
Speech videos must be uploaded in unedited or “raw” form. Video editing to correct for errors or latencies in speech is prohibited. Videos that have been edited before submission will receive a “0” grade. To submit a video, please follow the instructions highlighted below:
