Topic: Bacterial Menengitis
Your final presentation is worth 60 points (approx. 10% of your final grade). Each student will pick one of either an infectious disease or an individual microorganism that causes a human disease. The disease can be of bacterial, viral, protist, fungal or helminth in origin. You can pick any disease or organism that interests you as long as it already hasn’t been picked by another student. The only organisms that are off limits are HIV and ebola. There are a number of infectious diseases covered in chapters 18-23 of your textbook that you can choose from or you can choose one not in your book if you want. If there is something that really interests you, please try to reserve it early as only one person can present each disease/organism. I’ve started a Discussion forum where you can declare your topic (and see what has already been picked by other students).
Presentations will be preformed individually and be approximately 10-15 minutes in length. You must have a visual component, preferably on Power Point.
Presentations should cover, loosely, the material that we’ve been covering in class as it pertains to the disease/organism. Some questions that might help guide you in developing your presentation could be:
What is the significance of this organism?
What is its medical relevance?
Any historical significance or historical data pertaining to the disease?
Any epidemiological relevance?
What are the characteristics and symptoms of the disease?
How does it affect the host?
What is the nature and background of the organism and what types of tissues/cells does it infect?
How is it diagnosed and treated?
How is it transmitted?
How can it be prevented?
What are its natural habitats or reservoirs?
You can use your text books, the internet, any medical or nursing journals and whatever other sources you can find for information. You must site your information sources, especially for epidemiology and statistics.
Some good web sites to use (especially for epidemiology and statistics) are:
World Health Organization (WHO) www.WHO.int
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) www.cdc.gov
American Society for microbiology (ASM) www.asm.gov
Presentation Evaluations:
Length of presentation 10 points
Content and subject material 25 points
Coherence/ communication/ overall presentation 20 points
Attendance and comment/question to other presentations 5 points
Total 60 points
