Essay 1 (20 pts possible)

In class, we talked about social statuses and social roles.  For this essay, please describe yourself by naming and discussing your social statuses and social roles. 

In your essay, answer the following questions: 

1. Name at least two ascribed statuses and describe how they affect your behavior, how you perceive yourself, and how others perceive you.

2. Name at least two achieved statuses and describe how they affect your behavior, how you perceive yourself, and how others perceive you.

3. Do you have a master status? What is it?  Do you have a master status that is ascribed to you and is contrary to your own self-identification?

4. Name a social role that corresponds to the statuses that you name above.  What are you expected to do in your role? 

5. Do you ever experience role conflict or role strain? How so?  What do you do to resolve the role conflict or role strain?  Role conflict or strain refers to situations which arise when two social roles conflict with each other due to different expectations in terms of time, effort, behavioral expectations, etc.

The essay should be typewritten, double-spaced and 2-3 pages in length.  It also should conform to the normal standards of writing, i.e. no spelling errors, proper grammar, etc.
