Assignment:   Cost & Risk Assessment of the IED-Detection Robot System

Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) have been and continue to be a serious threat to military forces and to civilian populations.  You are a lead systems engineer with Advanced Robotics, Inc.  DoD has asked your company to develop a remotely-controlled portable robot system to support area clearance of IEDs in both urban and remote (rugged) environments.  This system is responsible for the identification of IEDs.  The neutralization or destruction of the IEDs will be handled by other systems or operators.   

1. Cost Assessment:  List and describe three cost drivers for each of the four lifecycle cost phases for the IED Detection Robot System:

          - Research and Development

          - Production and Deployment

          - Operating and Support

          - Disposal

2. Risk Assessment:  During the design phase, you are tasked to identify three operational risks for the IED Detection Robot System.

• List the three operational risks you have identified
• Assess these risks in terms of probability of occurrence and severity of consequences
• Develop and describe a risk mitigation strategy for each of these three risks.
