The reading for this assignment is Bertrand Russell's  essay Appearance and Reality

Writing

The reading for this assignment is Bertrand Russell's  essay Appearance and Reality.

In Appearance and Reality Russell makes the following argument:

What we see/hear/etc. are sense data.
The sense data cannot be identical with the physical objects that cause them.
------------------------------------------------------------
Therefore we never see/hear/etc. physical objects.

Write a very short (250-300 words) essay making this same argument.  That is, you should take Russell’s conclusion as your thesis.  Then you need to explain and offer support for his two premises.

Don't write about Russell -- make his argument your own, explaining it in your own words and trying to persuade your reader of the truth of these premises and the inescapability of the conclusion.

Russell uses the example of a table to make the argument.  Pick some other physical object to use as your example.  You can pick one sense, like sight, or use multiple senses to make your case.

In explaining the first premise you will have to explain what sense data are.
