Homework Assignment #3 – Automated Traffic Intersection System (ATIS)

Assignment:

You are the system engineer for an Automated Traffic Intersection System (ATIS) that will be built by your company for the city of Tucson, Arizona.  As the system engineer, you must analyze the requirements for this system for completeness and clarity.  In addition, you must identify any unneeded requirements to avoid over-engineering the system.  There are three basic needs that drive the requirements:

1. The system shall provide for the safety of vehicles and pedestrians.

2. The system shall result in fuel economy by improving traffic flow.

3. The system shall replace an existing system and provide an upgrade of the equipment to ease maintenance.

Assume that the system works as a four way intersection that has no special turn indicators (green arrows).  Also assume that the intersection is appropriate for crossing by pedestrians.  ATIS will replace a single intersection.  Things outside of the intersection should be viewed as input or output requirements for ATIS.

For each requirement listed in the attachment, identify the following items:

1. The basic need that this requirement fulfills (safety, fuel economy, or replacement)

2. Whether or not the requirement is ambiguous.  If ambiguous, rewrite the requirement so it is clear.

3. Whether the requirement is a performance or functional requirement.

Ambiguous?

Performance or Functional?

1. ATIS shall sense the traffic in and approaching the controlled intersection.

2. ATIS shall adjust the sequence of light changes to maximize traffic flow.

3. ATIS shall not operate with a fixed sequence of traffic light changes.

4. ATIS shall respond to remotely generated emergency vehicle commands and change appropriate signal lights to aid safe transit of emergency vehicles.

5. ATIS shall detect all types of vehicles at the intersection.

6. ATIS shall receive traffic data and commands from adjacent ATIS lights or from a central controller and coordinate the overall light sequence to maximize the flow of traffic in the preferred direction.

7. ATIS shall count vehicles passing through the intersection.

8. ATIS shall provide signal control to permit pedestrians to cross the intersection safely and with minimal disruption of traffic flow.

 9. In the event of internal malfunction or power loss, the ATIS shall revert to a fail-safe mode of operation:  the ATIS shall blink yellow in one direction and red in the other.

 10. ATIS shall never present simultaneous green signals to orthogonal traffic.

 11. ATIS shall present no physical obstruction to traffic approaching the intersection from either direction.

 12. ATIS shall use the existing power interface as its primary source.

13. ATIS shall operate 24 hours a day, 356 days a year.

 14. ATIS shall operate in all weather conditions.

 15. ATIS shall operate from -55 degrees to 125 degrees.

 16. ATIS shall provide a built-in test capability that allows for fault isolation within one hour of a fault’s occurrence.

17. ATIS shall have a maximum mean-time-to-repair of 4 hours.

 18. ATIS shall have no special transport/handling requirements.

 19. ATIS shall have a routine maintenance schedule not to exceed once a year.

 20. Training shall be provided at the manufacturer’s site.
