Place the events that take place during translation and protein synthesis in the correct order. First event The smaller subunit of the ribosome attaches to the mRNA strand and moves along it. The anticodon of a tRNA molecule carrying an amino acid matches with the complementary codon on the mRNA strand The ribosome adds a new amino acid to the growing polypeptide The tRNA molecules that have contributed amino acids to the protein chain leave the ribosome Last event

Expert Solution

The events that take place during translation are as under:

1) The smaller subunit of the ribosome attaches to the mRNA strand and moves along with it: On completing a cycle of polypeptide synthesis the 30S and 50S subunits remain associated as an inactive 70 S ribosome. Initiation factor 3 binds to the 30S subunit of the comples so as to promote dissociation. Subsequently, IF2 GTP fmet tRNA f met and IF3/MRNA 30S complexes combine with each other to form 30S initiation complex. It moves along the mRNA until it finds a start codon.

2) The anticodon of a tRNA molecule carrying an amino acid matches with the complementary codon on the mRNA strand: This stage is known as decoding in which a ribosome selects and binds an amino acyl tRNA, whose anticodon is complementary to the mRNA codon in the A site.

3) The ribosome adds a new amino acid to a growing polypeptide: The amino acid carried by the tRNA in the P site is transferred to the amino acids in the A site . The polypeptide increases in length as the ribosome adds a new amino acid.

4) The tRNA molecules that have contributed amino acids to the protein chain leave the ribosome: The tRNA in the P site is moved to the E site and then is released. This is known as translocation.
