English 1Plus: Reading & Composition

Essay 4:  Exploring the intersection of Identity and one of our other themes:  Work, Education, or Language.

Objective: For our final essay, we will be revisiting the rhetorical and tonal elements of our first three essays by engaging in deep analysis of our readings and conducting new in-depth research as a part of your Annotated Bibliography Research Project. For Essays 1 and 2, we studied Aristotle’s three methods of persuasion: logos, ethos, and pathos. For Essay 3, we then discussed how writers often use diction, metaphor, visualization/imagery, and syntax to express their thesis through tone. As a result, the focus for Essay 4 will be to use all of these techniques and research to extrapolate possible new solutions for important issues.

Readings/Videos: Any of our readings and TED Talks.

Annotated Bibliography Research Project: Students will use the LBCC library databases to find four (4) academic resources, including at least one (1) academic/scholarly peer reviewed journal and any combination of: newspapers, magazines, reports/studies, and books.

Topic: We have spent this semester reading and discussing the myriad issues surrounding work, education, and language. An integral part of this discussion is the idea of identity.  What makes us who we are? Does education change us? How does the combination of personality, family, and education help us face the challenges of work? How does story inspire or save us?

Writing task/Research:

In a thesis-driven research essay, please answer the following prompt:

How can language, story, and/or your Essay 3 policy claim be used to resolve your selected Annotated Bibliography research issue?

Example: How can story be used to resolve the issue of whether college athletes should be paid as professionals?

Required Sources and Elements:

  • Write a minimum of seven (7) pages.
  • Use at least three (3) of our readings/videos to support your claim.
  • Use at least three (3) of your Annotated Bibliography sources to support your claim, including at least one (1) Academic/Scholarly (Peer Reviewed) Journal.
