I chose to read Five Women, by Alan Ball. The first reason I chose to read this play is that it is a comedy. Another reason is that it reminds me of a scene from a musical I like called Always a Bridesmaid, Never a Bride from I love you, You're Perfect, Now Change. The scene is 4 bridesmaids who just went to their friend's wedding, and they are singing about always being the background, and wishing for their chance to get married, that seems like it will never come. Although this play is very different it reminds me of that scene, because of the foundation they both layout. This is a typical story of five women who all have one thing in common.... they don't like the bride! Of course, it takes them the whole story to figure this out, but the path of getting there is nothing short of a comedic one. What I really enjoyed is the completely different backgrounds of all the women. They all have such different stories, and reasons why they hate the bride, but they all have had some sort of close relationship with her, especially Meredith who is literally the bride's younger sister. Through all of their own stories, so many emotions go around the room that ultimately brings these women closer together. I think there was something very special and relatable about how the author chose to write these characters. He made each one unique, and I think as an audience member you can easily relate to one of the characters personality-wise, which really draws you in and keeps you connected.
