ESSAY 5:  Narrative

Write a narrative essay, a true-story with a purpose, of no less than 350 words.  You can go over the word count, but stay within 600 words.

Choose an episode or event from your life that holds special meaning for you.  The moment about which you write doesn’t have to be an “extreme” moment--in other words, it doesn’t have to involve an earth-shattering occurrence--it just needs to have a purpose and meaning.  Follow narrative structure when writing your essay; your essay should show your understanding of this structure as we’ve observed and talked about it through the last several class sessions. Be sure to write about your experience with precise words and carefully selected details--be mindful of your choices as a writer.   

Give your essay a title.

Use 12-point font, one-inch margins, and double spacing. 

Areas of evaluation:

Structure: 

• Do you have all of the parts of a narrative essay?   Does each part fulfill its purpose?

Development, Organization, and Creativity:

• Do you take the time to tell your story thoughtfully?  Do you include the details needed for your reader to “experience” your story? 
• Are the details vivid, specific, and sensory (as appropriate)?
• Does your word choice show thought and precision?
• Do you use paragraph divisions to show each new “phase” of your story?
• Does the overall purpose of your story come through?

Mechanics:

• Are your sentences properly constructed and properly punctuated?
• Is your essay generally free of typos and careless errors?
