Summarize your peers’ responses—To help ensure you understand your peers’ responses, summarize their main ideas in your own words

Psychology

  1. Summarize your peers’ responses—To help ensure you understand your peers’ responses, summarize their main ideas in your own words.
  2. Give plenty of support—As a community, we want to provide each other with supportive feedback but that should not come at the price of value. Go beyond “Nice post” and generic comments. Once you understand their posts, identify how your peers’ posts enhanced your learning, clarified specific issues, or challenged you to think differently.
  3. Constructively challenge your peers—Once you have provided positive feedback, provide a meaningful response based on your own opinion and understanding of the discussion question. This could include identifying where your peers went off track in their responses, elements you disagree with, or questions to help them to expand their thinking on a topic.
  4. End with a positive—To help keep the discussion cordial and professional, end with a positive. Connect your challenging response or question back to something positive or interesting about their posts. Integrating positive comments with constructive feedback helps keep the discussion flowing and individuals on track for meaningful discourse.

What topic and research question did you pursue?

My research topic is about substance abuse disorder with individual cognitive behavioral therapy methods. How affective will individual cognitive behavioral therapy be to reduce substance abuse?

How is your research question relevant to your passions and interests in psychology and to your purpose?

My research question is relevant to my interests, my growing education and passion for my current work. I believe that individualized therapy is affective to help reduce the use of illicit substances. There are many ways that can help individuals with harm reduction and meeting with a counselor for cognitive therapy weekly shows reduction with cognitive therapy. “CBT helps clients formulate coping strategies to handle potential stressors or difficulties following addiction treatment.”  ((Hardey, S., Thomas, S., & Seth, S. (2019, September 12))

Reflecting on the Library Research Knowledge Assessment, what skill areas were recommended for improvement and what skill areas did you do well on?

There is a lot that I could work on. The Library Knowledge Assessment noted that I need to work on narrowing my topic search, it is hard for me to find the information I fully need due to a broad search. I will be working on this because I know that it is hard for me to find articles that will fully be beneficial for my topic.

What strategies did you use to locate relevant articles?

The strategies I used for my research topic is, I used keyword throughout my search in the database. Psych info helped me a lot throughout the research progress. I realized that there is a lot articles pertaining to substance use and a lot of article pertaining to cognitive behavioral therapy.  The keywords that I used to help me locate articles are SUD, Substance use, illicit use, cognitive behavioral therapy. These helped narrow my search down to just a few articles that I found suitable for my research topic. I am looking at outside scholarly journals through my work place, we have a lot of research and continuing education for SUD and cognitive behavioral therapy.

Did you find Boolean commands (for example, AND, OR) confusing? What tips would you give others for learning theses commands?

I found them hard to understand at first. I realized that once I used them in the right way, it helped me locate articles better and quicker.  The tips that I would give to others who are learning Boolean commands is, read on it and make sure you are using the right key word.  I realized when I would say “substance use AND cognitive behavioral therapy I would have a whole slew of articles and I would have to go through them and find out which articles I should use and it took a lot of my time going through 100 plus articles.  If I wanted to only look for an article that had one of my keywords I would break it down and use OR and it helped me find an article for one or the other depending on what key word I used.

What insights did you gather about your research question?

The insights that I gathered about my research question is that there are a lot of factors that go into productive and successful cognitive behavioral therapy with individuals who suffer from substance use. There are so many factors and different things that contribute to substance use, just a few things that contribute to one’s substance use is trauma, pressure from friends and family to just name a few.

What conclusions did you come to about the role of research in your future career vision?

The conclusions that I have found through my research is the amount of study and learning that I still must learn about substance use. Even though I am currently an Alcohol and Drug counselor I learn something new every day. I believe that this helped me learn about cognitive behavioral therapy and substance use and learning the best way to find research articles on this subject. I feel that I will be a more successful counselor and working in my later graduate studies I can become confident in finding scholarly journals.
