Green Books Publishing Inc

Project Management

Green Books Publishing Inc. ("Green Books") was started two years ago by two friends, Julion Neidhardt and Jennifer Fitzsimmons, who met in college while studying in Toronto, Canada.  The two friends graduated in 2017.
Green Books strives to become the most profitable publishing company in Canada and currently serves the academic community.  Julion and Jennifer are targeting seasoned Professors who have established a reputation in their field and now want to author their own books. During their 4 years of study, the pair established many wonderful relationships with their Professors.  This allowed them to consult with their Professors on the launch of their new business. They discovered that the majority of Professors have tremendous subject matter expertise but consider themselves to be novice authors.  As a result, Professors set out in search of good freelancers for content editing, copyright management, cover design, publishing and promotion. Unfortunately, determining which freelancers to work with is rarely easy because few offer all the services required.  This discovery led Julion and Jennifer to launch their own publishing business.  As a full-service provider, Green Books does not aim to compete on price.  Instead, they charge a premium for the management of the end to end publication process.
In the new business, Julion is accountable for sales and marketing and Jennifer is accountable for editing, electronic assembly and publishing.  Each of the company's clients creates their own course material from scratch and this means each order is unique.  These unique orders are treated as individual projects.
Like many sectors, the publishing business is in a constant state of change. Green Books is riding a wave of interest in eBooks due in part to their greater portability, accessibility and environmental benefits.  Within the academic sector, competition among the publishers has always been intense.  Innovators like Green Books are looking for ways to better link student success to the eBook platform.
After two years of steady growth, Green Books began to experience some challenges in completing their eBook orders on time, on budget and with expected quality.   They knew it was time for more project management discipline.  One of Jennifer's college friends, Peter Brugnatti, became a Project Manager after graduation and had been working in the field for 2 years.  Jennifer had a great idea - ask Peter if he'd help Green Books better manage their projects!  Julion loved the idea but didn't think Peter would be up for the task as they didn't have much money to pay him.  Jennifer wasn't worried, Peter owed her a few favours for her efforts in their college group work assignments, so she contacted him right away.
Peter was happy to help.  He spent a few days with the Green Books' management team and the desktop publishers.  He noted that each eBook being produced was indeed a book; but that was all they had in common.  Each eBook had different content, layouts and cover designs.  Some were just collections of articles to reprint once copyright approvals were received, and others required extensive desktop publishing.  Understanding what each Professor needed had to be clearly documented and understood before starting production. However, this was rarely done correctly as the teams were eager to begin the creative design work.  His first recommendation was to create standard work breakdown structure (WBS) that would help all the teams ensure the scope of the work was correctly identified. The WBS would be broken down into the different phases of work associated with each project.   Peter offered to create standard WBS for Green Books. He decided that a process oriented WBS was most appropriate for the nature of this project.
In the Release Phase, the completed eBook is sent to the Professor. Final billing occurs and the remainder of the project closure activities is then completed.
You are Peter Brugnatti.  Your assignment is to complete the standard WBS for eBook projects.   Level 1 and Level 2 has been provided for you. Complete the WBS by adding the work packages as the 3rd Level and identify at least 3 activities for each of these work packages.
Each team will can refer to the WBS template given in the presentations also posted here.
